Remember the magnificent lightsaber from the Star Wars franchise? What we loved the most was its ability to hide the blade, so only the pocket-sized hilt existed, making it easier to carry and use.

When it comes to the world of AI, Phi-2, a brand-new small AI language model by Microsoft, has taken the world by storm. It is pretty similar to the shiny lightsaber from Star Wars - we mean, it's pocket-sized!

According to Microsoft Research’s post on X (formerly Twitter), Phi-2 is “small enough to run on a
laptop or mobile device.”

Now before you start judging Phi-2 by its size, here’s the catch: a report highlighted its power to rival and outshine the big guns in the AI galaxy (read: AI models like Llama 2, Mistral 7B and others).

You might be wondering, what’s the fuss about this Phi-2?

  • With its 2.7 billion parameters, Phi-2 is throwing punches at giants in the AI landscape. Besides, it's not just holding its ground but surpassing models that are a whopping 25 times larger!

  • Moreover, Microsoft isn't shy about pointing out that Phi-2 isn't just holding its own against the big guys; it's doing it with less "toxicity" and bias in its responses.

  • Remember Google's recently launched AI language model Gemini? Well, despite all the hype, Phi-2 flexed its neural muscles and reportedly outshined Gemini. Microsoft even had a playful jab at Google’s overhyped demo of its forthcoming super AI model, Gemini Ultra. Turns out, Phi-2, though much smaller, could do the same tasks and correct students' mistakes just as well.

With that, let’s understand how Phi-2 works:

  • Now, before you rush to deploy Phi-2 in your next big business idea, here's the catch: it’s only licensed for research purposes. Sorry, entrepreneurs - no commercial usage allowed.

  • Still, Microsoft has dazzled its users. They've been on a roll, releasing a whole suite of these small language models, each one breaking boundaries and setting new bars. From Phi-1 to Phi-1.5 and now Phi-2, Microsoft’s been like a proud parent showcasing their brainiac kids’ achievements.

  • The best part is these Phi models aren’t just good at coding; their common sense, reasoning and language understanding skills are something to boast about.

So, where can you find this wonder?

  • Microsoft has dropped Phi-2 in the Azure AI Studio model catalog. So, if you're a curious researcher waiting to dive into the world of language models, go grab Phi-2, your shiny new playground equipment.

While Phi-2 might not be up for commercial usage just yet, it's certainly shaking things up in the research world. Who knows, maybe one day, this little dynamo will break free from its "research-only" cage and revolutionize how we interact with AI.

Until then, let’s keep our eyes peeled for the next groundbreaking mic-drop moment in the ever-evolving world of artificial intelligence!

Do you think Phi-2 will be a game-changing entrant in the AI world? Will it give Microsoft a competitive edge over other AI giants in AI-driven research?
