Personalization has become the call of the day.

From sales pitches to the gaming industry, the products and services that draw in the most people nowadays are the ones that double down on personalized experiences—and in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), this requirement has become much easier to fulfill.

This is what social media giant Meta is looking to achieve with its latest move.

Meta is already celebrated for its open-source Llama family of AI models, which are open-source.

These models have also been credited for enabling Chinese AI startup DeepSeek’s highly praised AI models, which have gathered all the headlines this week.

As such, DeepSeek’s success has resulted in Meta assembling four war rooms of engineers to understand how DeepSeek was able to develop one of the most capable AI models at a fraction of the cost and time it took some of the biggest industry leaders, including Meta, OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and others.

At the same time, the company is also looking to enhance its own AI chatbot—Meta AI.

In a news release published on its website, Meta revealed that it was bringing in new features that would help its AI assistant become smarter, more personalized, and more tailored to users.

One of these updates includes boosting Meta AI’s memory capabilities.

Building on updates made late last year, Meta AI will remember certain details shared by users about themselves through 1:1 chats on WhatsApp and Messenger, allowing it to better personalize future responses.

The new update brings this feature to Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger for iOS and Android in the United States and Canada.

However, this will only apply to 1:1 conversations and not group chats. Users will also be able to delete its memory at any time.

“You can tell Meta AI to remember certain things about you (like that you love to travel and learn new language), and it can also pick up important details based on context,” reads the release.

“For example, let’s say you’re hungry for breakfast and ask Meta AI for some ideas. It suggests an omelet or a fancy frittata, and you respond in the chat to let Meta AI know that you’re a vegan. Meta AI can remember that information and use it to inform future recipe recommendations.”

These updates also enable Meta AI to offer users a greater level of personalization on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, enabling it to respond with information that’s more relevant to users.

“Let’s say you’re looking for something fun to do with your family this weekend and you ask Meta AI to suggest something,” explains Meta.

“Based on the home location you’ve listed as part of your Facebook profile, recent views of reels featuring live performances by various country artists and its memory that you have a partner and two young kids, Meta AI might suggest tickets for that weekend’s country music show at your local arena and reservations at a local brunch spot.”

This feature will be available to users in the U.S. and Canada.

Of course, privacy is an important aspect in such cases, and Meta didn’t shy away from reminding people it has invested over $8 billion in rebuilding its privacy program since 2019.

This overhaul came with major changes to its data usage practices, a move to strengthen its privacy policies, and new tools that offer users more control over their experiences.

Meta also made sweeping moves to enhance overall privacy.

This includes the introduction of Instagram Teen Accounts, which comes with built-in protections limiting who can contact teens and content curation guided by parents.

Meta also rolled out default end-to-end encryption for most users, launched several privacy features in its Quest line of mixed reality headsets, advanced its Privacy Aware Infrastructure that enforces end-user privacy protections, updated its Download Your Information to include data logs, and enhanced the speed and effectiveness of its Privacy Review efforts, which covers an average of 1,400 products, features, and data practices every month.

All of this has been enabled by the over 3,000 employees and experts that enable its privacy program.

Do you think these enhancements will allow Meta’s AI assistant to
