Meta To Use Reuters Content In Its AI Chatbot With Plans To Build An AI Search Engine
Updated on Tue, Oct 29, 2024
In the latest such initiative, the technology company said it is forming a strategic relationship with leading news agency Reuters. This move will give its AI chatbot access to real-time news.
While Meta has been out of the news publishing for a while due to regulatory concerns, this deal brings them back in the game.
The tech giant also announced it is working on developing an AI-powered search engine so that it doesn't have to rely on rival Google and Microsoft Bing for news. The goal is to give Meta's AI chatbot direct access to all the latest news and events without having to use any third-party services.
Read on to understand what the latest announcements mean for Meta and its customers!
What Is Meta’s New AI Search Engine About?
Reports say that Meta is working on an AI-powered search engine that will offer AI-generated summaries of current events. This AI chatbot will be regulated on its platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp for better user experience.
It will also be possible for Meta's AI chatbot to answer users' questions in real time with its integrated AI search engine, instead of relying on Google or Bing.
According to reports, a dedicated engineering team has been working on the search engine for about eight months to build a reliable database of information that its AI chatbot can utilize.
This search engine initiative comes after Apple's 2021 App Tracking Transparency feature caused problems for Meta. This feature limited Meta's ability to collect data and could have cost Meta billions of dollars in advertising income. These problems seem to be the reason why CEO Mark Zuckerberg to be self-sufficient in news sourcing and publishing.
By creating its own search engine capabilities, Meta aims to have greater control over its news services and prevent potential disruptions that might arise from third-party dependency. So, how does the Reuters partnership come into play?
What Does Meta’s Partnership With Reuters Means?
Meta is teaming up with Reuters to allow its AI chatbot to answer questions about current events, provide news summaries and source links from Reuters' articles.
This move marks Meta's return to news after years of dealing with problems related to its news content, primarily due to the concerns about misinformation. With the help of Reuters, a globally renowned agency reputed for its accurate and fact-based journalism, Meta aims to enhance the credibility of its AI chatbot's responses.
Reuters will be compensated through a multi-year deal, providing it with improved visibility and potential traffic through Meta’s AI chatbot. A Reuters spokesperson confirmed the deal, saying, "We partnered with tech providers to license our trusted, fact-based news content to power their AI platforms."
The deal comes amid Meta’s shift towards providing news on its platform where users actively search for news, rather than it appearing on their feeds. By leveraging Reuters' content within its AI chatbot, Meta aims to provide factually accurate and credible news across its platforms.
What Does This Mean For Meta Users?
For Meta’s consumers, these initiatives offer enhanced experiences with Meta's AI chatbot. Meta will be able to provide trustworthy information on current events in real-time to 3.59 billion people who actively use at least one Meta platform.
With Reuters content integrated with Meta's AI-powered chatbot, users will get direct access to news via Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp apps, making it easier to stay informed without switching platforms. Meta’s partnership with Reuters may also intensify competition among tech giants as they scramble to establish dominance in the AI-powered news space.
Additionally, Meta’s move to develop its own search engine could signal a new wave of competition within the AI search industry. With already established players like OpenAI and Apple introducing their own products and solutions, Meta entering the race may have major repercussions.
As this technology rolls out, it remains to be seen how effectively Meta’s AI efforts balance real-time accuracy, privacy and user satisfaction, especially given the scrutiny faced by technology companies around misinformation and consumer data.
Do you think Meta’s efforts will help it compete effectively against Google and Microsoft in the search engine market?
