The media and entertainment industry has never been far away from the technology industry.

In fact, technology is the reason why media pieces reach billions of people around the world. From streaming movies and TV shows on a mobile phone to cheering along to live sporting events from the comfort of one's home, technology brings the media and entertainment industry to everyone to enjoy.

This is only as far as media content delivery goes.

When it comes to producing such pieces, technology has become an integral part of the process.

From using electronic sounds for music and songs to computer-generated imagery (CGI) for movies and photo and video editing software, technology is helping artists and media professionals realize their artistic dreams in an easier way.

This is why leading directors and producers are betting big on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI).

Recently, we reported that legendary filmmaker, technology innovator, and visual effects pioneer James Cameron had joined the board of directors at Stability AI, a move that was aimed at unlocking new opportunities and helping creators bring their imagination to life.

James Cameron is the director behind some of the biggest Hollywood blockbusters, including Titanic, Avatar, The Terminator, Aliens, The Abyss, and more movies spanning genres such as sci-fi, romance, documentaries, and more.

Now, Cameron has partnered with AI and social media giant Meta, through his venture, Lightstorm Vision.

Through a blog post published by Meta on its website, the two will join forces to create world-class 3D entertainment experiences across live sports, concerts, feature films, TV series and more.

The deal will feature big-name IP on Meta Quest, which will also become Lightstorm Vision’s exclusive mixed reality (MR) hardware platform.

As per Meta, the move builds on its goal to make top-tier 3D content more accessible to creators, producers and other entertainment executives, as well as for people to enjoy at home and on the go. It comes as the demand for virtual and mixed reality experiences is growing considerably.

As such, Cameron, who comes in with over 40 years of experience, and his team at Lightstorm Vision have been pushing 3D technology forward for more than three decades. This has also earned them recognition as the world’s leading experts in stereoscopy (a technique that tricks the brain into thinking 2D images are 3D by creating an illusion).

“Together with Lightstorm Vision, we’ll improve access to 3D production tools across the broader entertainment industry. In addition to co-producing original content, we’ll leverage Lightstorm Vision’s cutting-edge technology and production techniques to revolutionize the creation of stereoscopic media,” said its blog post.

“Fantastic news… Announcing a comprehensive, multi-year partnership with Meta to revolutionize ALL visual media,” said James Cameron.

“Recently, Boz [Andrew Bosworth, Meta CTO and Head of Reality Labs] showed me some of Meta’s advanced tech. I was amazed by its transformational potential and power, and what it means for content creators globally.”

“I’m convinced we’re at a true, historic inflection point. Navigating that future with Meta will ensure ALL of us have the tools to create, experience, and enjoy new and mind-blowing forms of media.”

Meta believes that MR headsets form the next step in the evolution of media, as they bring in a new viewing experience that can be enjoyed by millions and millions of people, where its 360-degree environments put users in the center of the story.

Furthermore, this is enhanced by a wide range of interactive elements thrown into the mix, which make it a hot commodity for the media and entertainment industry.

“We’re in the midst of a creative revolution as studios and individual auteurs explore this new frontier. We can’t wait to map the future with Lightstorm Vision and enable the next generation of global 3D content creators,” reads an excerpt from Meta’s blog post.

What do you think about this partnership between Meta and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision? Do you think it will inspire other directors, media houses, and technology companies to engage in similar moves?
