Meta Is Set To Launch A Platform To Rival Twitter. Will It Survive The Challenges?

Remember how we went crazy when Batman went head-to-head with Superman? Well, pretty similar to that scenario, a new battle is brewing in the realm of social media. This time instead of capes and superpowers, there will be hashtags and trending topics!

According to a report, in a bid to rival Twitter, Meta has shared its plans for a text-based social network with its staff. This new platform, currently known as Project 92 AKA P92, is designed to allow users to follow the same accounts they already follow on Instagram, Meta's popular image-sharing app. Furthermore, it may even enable users to migrate their followers from decentralized platforms such as Mastodon.

A spokesperson from Meta has confirmed that the platform is indeed under development, stating, "We're exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. We believe there's an opportunity for a separate space where creators and public figures can share timely updates about their interests."

Meta's chief product officer, Chris Cox, has disclosed that coding for the platform is already in progress. While no official release date has been announced, there is speculation that it could potentially launch as early as the end of June 2023.

Besides, online leaks of internal screenshots, which Meta employees were shown, provide insights into the app's potential appearance. BBC has confirmed the authenticity of these screenshots, suggesting that the layout of the new platform will resemble Twitter, providing familiarity to users accustomed to the popular microblogging site.


On the other hand, Twitter has faced recent scrutiny over its moderation practices, leading to its withdrawal from the EU's voluntary disinformation code. Critics have accused Twitter of reducing moderation efforts under the leadership of Elon Musk, increasing the spread of misinformation. However, Musk himself claims that since assuming control in October 2022, there has been "less misinformation rather than more" on the platform.

Meta's text-based network, P92, could pose a more significant challenge to Elon Musk's Twitter than existing competitors such as BlueSky or Mastodon. However, the advantage lies in the vast Instagram community, with Meta reporting approximately two billion users.

This number dwarfs the estimated 300 million users for Twitter, although the accuracy of these figures cannot be verified.
