Remember how facial recognition was a part of a high-tech, retina-scan-activated lock in Star Trek: Wrath of Khanor? Facial recognition technology has often made its way into the world of fiction – sometimes to #SpyInDisguise or #RevealTheFraudFaces. Now, it’s making news in the real world as well. On January 28th, James Dolan, CEO of Madison Square Garden and owner of the New York Knicks extended his support for using facial recognition technology to ban intro entry in Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall.

Jason Dolan spoke with FOX 5 New York about the system; just one day post – Letitia James, the Attorney General, released a statement questioning the use of facial technology to deny entry into MSG and Radio City, which Dolan's company also operates.

"MSG Entertainment cannot fight their legal battles in their own arenas," Attorney General James wrote in her statement. "Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall are world-renowned venues and should treat all patrons who purchased tickets with fairness and respect."

What exactly Attorney General James is referring to? For that, we must take a little detour into the flashback. It was around Christmas a New Jersey attorney claimed that she was barred from entering a Rockettes performance at Radio City Music Hall with her daughter, according to NBC 4 New York. She further stated that through facial recognition, she was identified as a lawyer for a firm involved in litigation against one of MSG Entertainment's companies and hence the barring.

As per the report by New York Times, the ban on attorneys was enacted last summer and the database included faces of fans who were banned for breaking rules at the company’s venues.

In a recent interview with New York City radio station, Dolan refused the reports of denying entry to the fans and said they were not permitted to enter the premise after passing remarks like telling him to sell the team. Dolan continued that fans should not be concerned about being banned from the arena unless they become particularly aggressive or offensive.

In another interview with Fox 5, Dolan said that his organization would comply and give Letitia James (the Attorney General) any information they require to determine whether the use of facial recognition could be discriminatory. What do you think, facial recognition technology will be a helpful move in maximizing security? Does using this technology for entry make sense? Drop your views in the comment section below.
