Updated on Mon, May 11, 2026
TL;DR
- Dua Lipa sued Samsung Electronics for $15 million over alleged unauthorized image use.
- The lawsuit claims Samsung used the singer’s photo on TV packaging without permission.
- Dua Lipa says the alleged use falsely suggested she officially endorsed Samsung’s televisions.
Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against Samsung Electronics seeking at least $15 million in damages. According to the complaint filed in a California federal court, the company allegedly used a copyrighted backstage photo of the singer on TV packaging sold in stores, making it appear as though she endorsed the products.
The image in question is titled “Dua Lipa - Backstage at Austin City Limits, 2024,” and the lawsuit states that the singer owns all rights connected to the photograph. Along with copyright and trademark infringement claims, Dua Lipa has also accused Samsung of violating her publicity rights and damaging her commercial reputation.
Samsung’s alleged unauthorized use of Dua Lipa's image has "caused and continues to cause dilution" of the pop star's "brand identity and commercial goodwill by falsely conveying to the consuming public that she approves of and endorses" the products in question, her lawyers added.
Her legal team included screenshots of social media posts and comments in the filing to support the claim that customers believed the singer was associated with the televisions. One comment reportedly said they would buy the TV “just because Dua is on it.”
Topics For More Insights:
According to her lawyers, Dua Lipa first raised concerns about the issue in June last year and asked Samsung to stop using the image. However, the lawsuit claims the company continued doing so. Samsung has declined to comment on the ongoing case, saying it cannot discuss pending litigation.
As the case moves ahead, it is expected to bring more attention to how companies use celebrity images in advertising and product packaging. The lawsuit also highlights how strongly celebrity endorsements can influence consumer decisions, especially when people believe a public figure is officially connected to a brand or product.
