India Partners With Alibaba.com For Global MSME Reach
Updated on Fri, Feb 13, 2026
TL;DR
- India teams up with Alibaba.com to help small businesses sell abroad.
- This comes despite ongoing bans on Chinese apps.
- The goal is to give Indian MSMEs a bigger global reach.
The collaboration aims to identify and support Indian startups that can onboard and scale exporters on Alibaba’s global B2B platform. These startups will receive commissions and technical support to help manufacturers and traders tap into international markets.
The move stands out given India’s 2020 decision to ban dozens of Chinese-linked consumer apps after a deadly border clash. Platforms such as TikTok, PUBG Mobile, and AliExpress remain restricted. This new engagement with Alibaba.com, however, signals a selective and tightly defined approach rather than a broader policy reset.
Micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are central to India’s export strategy. They account for nearly half of the country’s exports and about 31% of GDP, according to the government’s latest Economic Survey. Expanding digital access to global buyers is seen as critical to sustaining that momentum.
Alibaba.com says its B2B platform connects more than 50 million active buyers across over 200 countries and regions. “Alibaba.com has been active in India for over two decades, and we remain dedicated to our core mission of empowering MSMEs to scale their businesses globally,” said Rocky Lu, head of India business at the company.
“Our focus continues to be on leveraging our digital infrastructure to help ‘Made in India’ products reach an international audience through digital transformation,” Rocky Lu added.
Topics For More Insights:
Policy observers describe the partnership as a calculated step, maintaining restrictions in sensitive sectors while allowing economic engagement where there is clear benefit.
With India looking to diversify exports and strengthen its small business ecosystem, the collaboration shows a practical, export-first mindset rather than a shift in its broader China policy.
