Hyundai Mobis Reveals 65 New Mobility Technologies Set To Enhance The Automotive Industry

On October 4, 2024, Hyundai Mobis held its bi-annual R&D Tech Day, which showcases its innovations and the multiple projects the company worked on.

This version too sported numerous boisterous announcements that are set to enhance and improve the automotive and mobility industry and could even revolutionize it.

What Did Hyundai Mobis Reveal?

 

• At its 2024 R&D Tech Day, Hyundai Mobis unveiled 65 new mobility technologies, which are set for commercial adoption and releases within the next two or three years.

• These included 14 world-first technologies and other vital components, including 65 key technologies in sectors such as electrification, electronics and safety, with the event spanning seven themes.

• The achievements are a result of the company pouring a record-high R&D investment of 1.7 trillion KRW (Korean won) or roughly $1.2 billion on electrification and electronics.

• On the same day, the company announced its three core development strategies for electrification components, which included drive systems, battery systems and power conversion systems.

• Leveraging expertise from its hybrid battery systems, motors and inverters since 2011, the company plans to take the lead in the industry with electrification solutions for components, systems, Advanced Automotive Mobility (AAM) and robotics.

• Its drive system strategy features a 3-in-1 integrated drive system that combines motors, reduction gears and inverters, focusing on miniaturization, high-efficiency design, oil cooling and power module technology. Building on this, specialized drive systems for PBVs and AAMs are also under development.

• The battery system strategy emphasizes thermal management stabilization for heat resistance and flame retardancy, alongside Cell-to-Pack technology to enhance energy density and plans for next-gen battery cells and recycled battery initiatives.

• The power conversion system strategy includes developing the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) for Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) connectivity and accelerating power semiconductor development.

• According to a Hyundai Mobis spokesperson, “These achievements were made possible by advancing preemptive projects aligned with mobility trends, fostering a flexible R&D culture and securing top talent through substantial investments.”

• Ahead of this, Hyundai Mobis also recently announced that it became the ‘First Asian Company’ to receive the European Automotive Association’s cybersecurity certification.

What Is Hyundai Mobis’ R&D Tech Day About?

 

• While the company’s R&D Tech Day is usually reserved for clients only, where Hyundai Mobis showcases its research and development achievements to clients every other year, this year’s event was open to external stakeholders too.

• It was held at the Uiwang Research Center, which serves as its Electrification Research Building, in Gyeonggi Province and witnessed participation from major domestic media outlets.

• The building, which completed construction last year, serves as a specialized research facility dedicated to next-generation electrification technologies and enables the consolidation of the development of key electrification components, including R&D, testing and evaluation and quality analysis.

• The move was meant to signify the company’s confidence in the results of its future mobility R&D development outcomes.

• Lee Young-Kook, Vice President of Hyundai Mobis's Electric Powertrain Engineering Division said, “Despite external environmental changes such as the Chasm, hundreds of researchers at the Uiwang Research Center are diligently pursuing uninterrupted R&D activities.”
