Gujarat Partners With Elon Musk’s Starlink To Expand Internet Access In Remote Areas

Even as digital connectivity expands across India, millions in remote and tribal areas still struggle with weak or no internet access. Bridging this gap has become a priority for state governments aiming to improve education, healthcare, and public services. Well, Gujarat is now taking a big step toward this goal.

Gujarat is partnering with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring satellite-based internet to remote and underserved areas. On Monday, the state government signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) with the SpaceX subsidiary to expand high-speed connectivity where traditional telecom networks are weak.


Announcing the development on X, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel said, “Happy to share that the Government of Gujarat has exchanged a Letter of Intent (LoI) with Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, to strengthen digital connectivity across the state.”
 
He added, “This LoI will enable high-speed satellite-based internet connectivity in remote, border, tribal and underserved areas with limited telecom infrastructure, accelerating Gujarat’s digital connectivity mission and strategic digital initiatives.”
 
The partnership aims to enhance access to essential services in areas that have struggled with internet connectivity. According to the government, improved satellite internet will support education and healthcare outreach, strengthen disaster preparedness and security systems, and make government services more accessible, particularly in tribal and aspirational districts.
 
To ensure smooth rollout, a joint working group comprising officials from both Gujarat and Starlink will oversee the implementation.
 
Bhupendra Patel said, “In view of the need for seamless and easy connectivity across the state, a Joint Working Group comprising representatives of the Government of Gujarat and Starlink will be constituted to ensure the effective implementation of this LoI, contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.”
 
Gujarat joins other Indian states in welcoming Starlink. Last month, Goa signed an MoU to boost digital connectivity and disaster response systems, while Maharashtra became the first state to formalize a partnership with Starlink in November 2025, targeting rural and tribal districts.
 
Starlink’s entry into India came in mid-2025 after regulatory approvals, including a Unified Licence from the Department of Telecommunications and clearance from space regulator IN-SPACe, allowing the company to operate satellite internet services nationwide.

With this initiative, Gujarat aims to overcome long-standing connectivity challenges, ensuring that even its most remote communities can access reliable high-speed internet. This is definitely a great move that could reshape digital services across the state.
