Google Flights Leverages Amtrak Data To Boost Sustainable Transport Decisions Amid Green Initiative Push
Updated on Thu, Oct 3, 2024
In this traffic jam of applications, businesses look to reduce digital congestion by integrating their apps with those of others.
One of the more popular options in this technique is integrating an application or a company’s data with Google’s search engine, so that when users search for a particular product or service, they’re immediately provided with relevant information.
For instance, when people search for flight options from one destination to another, Google’s search page shows them key flight information, such as duration, cost, timings and more.
Now, Google is expanding on this capability by introducing information from Amtrak, the United States' national passenger railroad company that has been in operation for over 50 years.
This move builds on Google’s green and sustainable initiative, which aims to push more climate-friendly travel and commuting options by providing lower-carbon alternatives to driving and flying through Google’s Maps and Search applications.
So, what’s Google’s new partnership with Amtrak about? Let’s explore!
What Is The Google And Amtrak Partnership About?
-
Through a news release published on its website, Amtrak announced that it was partnering with Google to encourage travelers to choose more sustainable transportation methods – trains.
-
The move involves a newly launched direct data integration that will provide Googlers with information about updated Amtrak departure times, trip durations and fares directly on the Google Search results page.
-
The information will appear if users are searching for travel options between two Amtrak destinations.
-
Furthermore, users of Google Flights or travelers searching for flights in Google Search will be provided the option to switch to traveling by the eco-friendlier rail.
-
This integration will also allow customers to complete bookings on Amtrak’s website without having to re-enter information.
-
Customers can even reduce their carbon footprint by 72% each time they travel by Amtrak instead of flights, as per the company.
-
Currently, Amtrak offers users a safe, environmentally efficient way to reach more than 500 destinations across 46 states in the US and parts of Canada.
-
The move was met with praise and criticism, where people noted the benefits of the move but found it counterproductive as trains can cost more than flights while taking longer to reach a destination.
-
Perhaps the phrase “It’s about the journey, not the destination” could be applied in this situation?
What Did Amtrak Say?
-
Amtrak President Roger Harris, said, “One of the biggest impacts we can make towards climate change is shifting the way people get around.”
-
“As we continue offering services that motivate people to shift out of cars and planes into trains, we are thrilled that this integration makes it even easier for users to find rail options for their travel needs while also potentially lowering their carbon emissions.”
Furthermore, in a combined effort, Google’s parent company Alphabet along with McKinsey Sustainability, Meta, Shopify and Stripe signed a world-first carbon removal deal for $24.5 million with CarbonRun to lime rivers in Canada.
The move comes as a bigger commitment called Frontier, which includes a scheme to buy at least $1 billion of carbon removal by 2030.
Ahead of this, Google’s capabilities have been used by Sabre Corporation to measure its business travel Scope 3 emissions (indirect greenhouse gas emissions). This marks the first time a company has used Google and Travalyst’s Travel Impact Model to measure such an impact.
Do you think Google’s partnership with Amtrak will enable sustainable and cleaner transportation?
