GitLab's Survey Reveals The Influence Of Generative AI On Software Development!
Updated on Fri, Sep 8, 2023
GitLab recently surveyed 1,000 senior tech executives, including developers, security and operations professionals, about the role of AI. What did they find?
No time to waste – let's dive into the news!
GitLab conducted a study that provided insight into how programmers perceive the influence of artificial intelligence on the software development industry.
The research, titled "The State of AI in Software Development," features commentary from that covers anxiety about data privacy, intellectual property and security – all themes intertwined with optimism and caution about the future of AI.
According to Alexander Johnston, Research Analyst in the Data, AI, & Analytics Channel at 451 Research, a division of S&P Global Market Intelligence, "Enterprises are seeking out platforms that allow them to harness the power of AI while addressing potential privacy and security risks."
In spite of the fact that 83% of those polled believe AI implementation is critical for competitive survival, a sizable 79% have expressed concerns about AI tools gaining access to confidential data and IP. So, what's the consensus on AI-driven software development?
Here are three questions to help us better understand the situation:
1. What Is The Impact On Developer Productivity?
More than half of the respondents (51%) cited increased developer productivity as a major advantage of AI. Yet, security experts worry that more holes in security could be introduced by AI-written code, leading to more rework and remediation.
While 11 percent of a developer's effort is spent on testing code, only 7 percent is spent identifying and fixing security flaws. This begs the question, in the AI era, how much of an advantage can AI automation really offer programmers and security experts.
2.What Are The Concerns Around Data Privacy And Intellectual Property?
Challenges to data privacy and intellectual property protection are highlighted in the survey. Most C-level technologists prioritize these factors when evaluating the use of AI software in software development.
Additionally, 32% of respondents said they were "very" or "extremely" worried about incorporating AI into the software development process. For example, 39% are concerned that security flaws may be introduced into the code that is generated by AI, while 48% are worried that the code generated by AI will not be afforded the same copyright protection as human-authored code.
3. How Can We Fill The Voids In AI Expertise?
The survey finds that while there is excitement about AI's potential, there is a gap between what organizations are offering in terms of AI training and what professionals actually need.
75 percent of respondents said their companies provide training and resources for utilizing AI but the same percentage said they needed to seek resources independently, indicating the available training may not be adequate.
81 percent of people who took the survey indicated they need more training on AI before they can use it effectively in their jobs. 65 percent of organizations that intend to employ AI for software development also intend to recruit new personnel to oversee the introduction of AI.
What’s The Bottomline?
The GitLab Global DevSecOps Report found that just 25% of developers' time is spent on code generation. However, AI can enhance productivity and cooperation in over 60% of developers' daily work, stated by GitLab's Chief Product Officer, David DeSanto.
The entire premise of AI can only be realized if it is integrated into every stage of the software development lifecycle, where it can help not only developers but everyone engaged the process to save time and effort through AI automation.
How should businesses approach AI adoption when developers see AI as 'essential' but also have concerns about data privacy and IPR?
