The technology of artificial intelligence can be a major boon to the world – but it also has inherent risks. So, what’s happening in reality with its regulation?

Well, leaders from the G7 countries and the European Union have come together to limit the roaring beast of artificial intelligence (AI). Named as "Hiroshima AI Process," this groundbreaking initiative was launched at the G7 Summit on May 19, 2023. The goal of this initiative was to establish a set of global guardrails for the wild world of advanced AI systems.

You might be wondering why this initiative is that important:

  • This might be giving the vibe of 'just one more initiative' but surprisingly, there's some real action happening here. Since the European Commission announced its intentions at the TTC Ministerial on May 31, 2023, they've been hard at work alongside international partners within the G7. Their mission is to develop a guiding principle and a Code of Conduct for AI to set the world on a course toward responsible AI innovation.

  • These international commitments align perfectly with the legally binding rules currently in the works as part of the comprehensive EU Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act). That means that Europe is not only talking the talk but walking the walk regarding AI safety, innovation and investment.

  • The proposed EU AI Act is like a superhero cape for AI, ensuring the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses while supercharging AI uptake and innovation across the European Union. It'll introduce risk-based, legally binding rules for AI systems entering the European market.

  • What's even more exciting is that the G7 leaders have come to an agreement on International Guiding Principles for AI and they're working on a voluntary Code of Conduct for AI developers. These principles and the voluntary Code of Conduct will play a harmonious melody alongside the EU's AI Act, bringing the power of trustworthy AI to a global stage.

Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, is thrilled with this development, saying "The potential benefits of Artificial Intelligence for citizens and the economy are huge. However, the acceleration in the capacity of AI also brings new challenges. Already a regulatory frontrunner with the AI Act, the EU is also contributing to AI guardrails and governance at the global level. I am pleased to welcome the G7 international Guiding Principles and the voluntary Code of Conduct, reflecting EU values to promote trustworthy AI. I call on AI developers to sign and implement this Code of Conduct as soon as possible."

Now, let's see what the motto of these guiding principles is:

  • There are eleven guiding principles that the leaders of seven countries and the EU have adopted. The principles are all about making sure AI tech is safe and trustworthy for businesses. These guidelines also include risk mitigation and vulnerability identification by finding the weak spots and shoring them up. Think of it as a digital immune system for AI for businesses, helping them access AI that is as healthy as possible!

  • Just like sharing is caring in the real world, in the AI world, sharing responsibly is the name of the game. Furthermore, these guiding principles will emphasize responsible information sharing between AI systems.

  • Apart from that, these principles include aspects such as cyber-risk reporting and cybersecurity investments. This will ensure if something goes wrong with your AI systems, there's instant reporting and safeguarding.

  • Recently, finding out if the content is AI-generated has been a real struggle for businesses. These guiding principles also cover the labeling of AI-generated content. So, when AI creates something, people will know it's not the work of a human mind and treat it as such.

Reportedly, these foundational principles will soon become a practical and realistic Code of Conduct for AI developers, offering detailed guidance on how to develop AI responsibly. Both documents, the guiding principles and the Code of Conduct, will be reviewed and updated regularly. Besides, the G7 leaders are calling on all organizations working with advanced AI systems to commit to this Code of Conduct, with the first batch of signatories will be announced soon.

Do you think such unified guidelines will be effective in keeping AI development in check? Should other regional authorities undertake similar AI regulation initiatives?
