AI coding tools are helping developers build software faster than ever, but they can also bring unexpected costs if left unchecked. A recent incident at fintech startup Slash shows how quickly AI usage can add up, turning what started as a simple side project into a surprisingly expensive lesson for both developers and businesses.

TL;DR

  • A fintech employee accidentally spent over $80K on AI tokens.
  • Brainrot Shooter game attracted 7,000 players in 48 hours.
  • The $80K AI mistake turned into a successful game launch.

The employee, named Nicolas Brillante, said, the spending wasn't intentional and happened because he underestimated how quickly AI costs could grow when repeatedly loading the game's entire codebase into the model during development.

Instead of reacting negatively, Slash took the situation with humor. The company joked that everyone should play Brainrot Shooter so the expense could be written off as a marketing cost. Unexpectedly, the game gained real traction.

Within its first 48 hours, Brainrot Shooter attracted nearly 7,000 players, generated almost 9,000 hours of gameplay, reached 437 peak concurrent players, and even received multiple advertising inquiries. What began as an expensive mistake reportedly evolved into a strategic initiative within the company.

The incident also highlights a growing challenge as AI coding tools become a bigger part of software development. While these tools can significantly improve productivity, they can also drive up costs if usage is not monitored carefully. Companies are increasingly treating AI spending like cloud infrastructure expenses, requiring closer oversight and budget controls.

Slash is not the only company facing this issue. Earlier this year, Uber reportedly exhausted its annual AI budget in just four months before introducing internal spending caps, showing that managing AI costs is becoming an important priority as organizations expand their use of AI-powered development tools.
