As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to dazzle businesses, the ecommerce supply chain and fulfillment industry is joining in by enhancing its operations.

Transportation, e-commerce and business services conglomerate FedEx revealed a new deal with Nimble, an AI robotics and autonomous e-commerce fulfillment technology company, to boost operation efficiency.

This move comes just days after Amazon announced a big partnership with Covariant, an AI company that builds advanced AI models that enable robots to see, reason and act on the world around them.

What Is The FedEx And Nimble Deal About?

 
  • Through a news release published on its website, FedEx announced a strategic alliance with Nimble.

  • The partnership includes a strategic FedEx investment into Nimble, which will help it grow its business, streamline operations and scale its fulfillment efforts across North America.

  • FedEx will use Nimble’s fully autonomous 3PL model to scale.

  • Nimble’s next-gen robotic fulfillment model, 3PL, enables 40% cost savings, reduced warehouse sizes and the ability to handle millions of objects using intelligent AI-powered robots that need no labor force.

  • Currently FedEx has over 130 warehouse and fulfillment operations in North America, with 475 million returns processed annually.

  • Furthermore, the company helps brands consolidate functions, increase agility and accelerate click-to-door speed through its FedEx Supply Chain.

  • The move comes as FedEx builds on its mission to make supply chains smarter for its customers by optimizing its physical and digital network.

  • Scott Temple, President, FedEx Supply Chain, said, “Our strategic alliance and financial investment with Nimble expands our footprint in the e-commerce space, helping to further scale our FedEx Fulfillment offering across North America.”

  • Simon Kalouche, Founder and CEO of Nimble, said, “We’re thrilled to be engaging in this multifaceted alliance with a logistics industry leader like FedEx to pioneer and scale autonomous fulfillment.”

It’s not just FedEx that’s turning to the amazing abilities of AI models blended with robotics to enhance its operations and speed up fulfillment automation efforts, as Amazon is also making moves in this direction.
 

What Is Amazon Doing To Enhance Fulfillment?

 
  • Through a news release published on its website, Amazon announced it has signed a commercial agreement with AI robotics company Covariant.

  • This includes hiring its founders, Pieter Abbeel, Peter Chen and Rocky Duan, who will join Amazon’s Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics Team along with a group of research scientists and engineers representing around 25% of Covariant’s current workforce.

  • Amazon will receive a non-exclusive license to Covariant’s Robotic Foundation Models.

  • This will help Amazon drive new ways to help their hundreds of thousands of mobile robots, robotics arms and other automation systems learn while enhancing automation efforts and enabling safer and better operations.

  • Amazon comes in with decades of experience pioneering the use of machine learning (ML) models, as well as developing and deploying the world’s largest fleet of industrial robotics.

  • The goal of the move is to develop, implement and improve Covariant’s technology within Amazon’s operations

  • “Covariant’s models will help drive new ways to generalize how our robotic systems learn and provide dynamic opportunities for how we use automation to make our operations safer and better deliver for customers.”

  • The move will also see Amazon grow its AI and robotics team by adding world-class talent.

  • Covariant will continue serving its customers with fulfillment and distribution center automation services, led by Ted Stinson and Tianhao Zhang.

  • Ted Stinson, who was the COO will assume the role of CEO.

  • Joseph Quinlivan, VP of Amazon Fulfillment Technologies & Robotics, said, “We’re excited to welcome some of Covariant’s talented team to Amazon and look forward to building on this technology with them to deliver the next generation of robotics that will drive forward the state-of-the-art in automation.”

  • [Contd.] “With some of the smartest minds, we will advance fundamental research, marrying our rich expertise to unlock new ways for AI and robots to assist our operations employees.”

  • [Contd.] “Imbedding Covariant’s AI technology into our existing robot fleet will make them more performant and create real world value for our customers.”
