Generative artificial intelligence-powered (GenAI) chatbots have been all the hype over the last year and a half owing to their capabilities to quickly generate text, audio, images, videos and more.

However, in order to generate a wide variety of diverse answers, chatbots and GenAI tools need to be trained on data. The more data the better and one strong source for such material is the information fed by users when asking questions.

This is where some concerns that users have with regards to this powerful technology creep up. These include the validity of answers generated, the accuracy of information provided and the privacy offered by artificial intelligence (AI) companies enabling chatbots.

While the other concerns might take time to be resolved, the question of privacy is one that DuckDuckGo, the software company that offers products aimed at helping people protect their online privacy, is looking to resolve with its latest announcement.

So, what did the company reveal? Let’s explore!

What Did DuckDuckGo Announce?

  • Through a blog post published on its official blog website, DuckDuckGo announced its new product – DuckDuckGo AI Chat – which offers users an anonymous way to access popular chatbots such as Open AI's GPT 3.5 Turbo, Anthropic's Claude 3 Haiku, Meta Llama 3 (open source) and Mistral's Mixtral 8x7B (open source).

  • The anonymous interaction feature is optional, can easily be switched off and is free to use within daily limits.

  • The company further clarified that the chats are private and anonymized by DuckDuckGo and that the data is not used by any AI model for training.

  • The company plans to add access to more such generative AI models soon, while other improvements are already being prepared including more browsing points and paid plans for higher daily limits and advanced models.

  • The idea behind DuckDuckGo AI Chat is to “show the world that protecting your privacy online can be easy.”

  • Users can access top chatbots through AI Chat’s landing page, where they pick their preferred model and start using it just like any other chat interface.

  • This builds on the search feature the company offers, which also observes anonymity.

  • Ahead of this, even DuckDuckGo doesn’t save or store any chats and even removes all metadata and personal information, meaning that they can’t be traced back to any individual. This is done by removing a user’s IP address and swapping it for their own.

  • As per the blog post, “We have agreements in place with all model providers to ensure that any saved chats are completely deleted by the providers within 30 days, and that none of the chats made on our platform can be used to train or improve the models.”

What Did DuckDuckGo Say?

  • Through the published blog post DuckDuckGo said, “Our mission is to show the world that protecting your privacy online can be easy. We believe people should be able to use the Internet and other digital tools without feeling like they need to sacrifice their privacy in the process.”

  • [Contd.] “So, we meet people where they are, developing products that add a layer of privacy to the everyday things they do online. That’s been our approach across the board – first with search, then browsing, email, and now with generative AI via AI Chat.”

  • Talking about what’s next regarding future updates, product developments and more, DuckDuckGo said, “We’re excited to spread the word about AI Chat, but there are already improvements on the way. Keep an eye out for new capabilities, like custom system prompts, and general improvements to the AI Chat user experience.”

  • [Contd.] “We’re also planning to add more chat models – potentially including either DuckDuckGo- or user-hosted options. If you’re interested in seeing a particular chat model or feature added in the future, please let us know via the Share Feedback button in the AI Chat screen.”

Do you think this move by DuckDuckGo will help it grow its user base? Do you think the top popular AI chatbots should consider making similar moves?
