Feeling tired and hungry but don’t feel like cooking, yet want a delicious, nutritious meal?

... or maybe you’ve got friends or family over and want some fast, scrumptious food?

... or perhaps you’re busy at work and have no time to step out to grab a bite?

Basically, you want something to put out the fire in the belly without having to step out of your house or office, what do you do?

Thankfully, technology has advanced enough for us to avoid spending time pondering the answer to this question. You’ll simply open a food delivery app on your phone and place an order for food (deciding what to order could take time, though) to be delivered to your doorstep or office, or wherever you want, right?

This is what food delivery platforms offer their customers—simplified food delivery. #NoHungerGames

To further streamline and enhance this goal, leading global food delivery service provider DoorDash announced two new key acquisitions—on the same day.

Talk about instant delivery!

DoorDash And Deliveroo

DoorDash announced that it has agreed to buy U.K. delivery service company Deliveroo for around $3.87 billion (or £2.9 billion). The deal will strengthen DoorDash’s position as a leading global platform in local commerce.

Currently, DoorDash operates in over 30 countries, has partnered with more than 500,000 local businesses on its marketplaces, and serves over 42 million monthly active users.

It enables users to order and get delivery for food, groceries, essentials, medicines, flowers, alcohol, pet supplies, and more. It also allows users to request package pickups and drop-offs to carriers such as UPS, FedEx, and USPS.

However, all of the markets that Deliveroo operates in are new for DoorDash. The acquisition brings DoorDash access to 9 new countries across Europe and Asia—the United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Ireland, Italy, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar. As such, the company has partnerships in place with around 176,000 local businesses.

“Coming together with teams that have similar visions and values accelerates our work to achieve that mission. Deliveroo is just such a team and one that I have long admired,” said Tony Xu, CEO and Co-founder, DoorDash. “We’ll cover more than 40 countries with a combined population of more than 1 billion people, enabling us to provide more local businesses with the tools and technology they need to thrive.”

“DoorDash and Deliveroo are like-minded organizations with a shared strategic vision and aligned values,” said Will Shu, Deliveroo’s CEO and Co-founder. “Together, we will be even better positioned to serve consumers, merchants, riders and local communities.”

DoorDash And SevenRooms

On the same day, DoorDash said that it has reached an agreement to acquire global hospitality tech leader SevenRooms to enhance its Commerce Platform with omnichannel tools for restaurants and hospitality businesses.

The cost of the acquisition is said to be $1.2 billion in cash and is expected to close during the second half of 2025, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals.

SevenRooms offers restaurants, hotels, and hospitality businesses an industry-leading CRM platform equipped with the best-in-class tools for marketing, operations, and guest experience, helping them improve guest relationships, drive revenue growth, and streamline operations.

The acquisition will bring these capabilities into the DoorDash Commerce Platform, along with access to SevenRooms’ expanded resources and global reach, helping support an open, partner-friendly ecosystem.

Founded in 2011, SevenRooms has more than 13,000 dining, hotel F&B, nightlife, and entertainment venues globally, including Marriott International, MGM Resorts International, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group, Wynn Resorts, Jumeirah Group, Hard Rock Hotels & Resorts, Atlantis Resorts, Rosewood Hotel Group, and many more.

“We’re enhancing the DoorDash Commerce Platform to help merchants serve their customers across all channels,” said Parisa Sadrzadeh, VP, Strategy and Operations at DoorDash. “With SevenRooms, we’re excited to give local businesses around the globe new ways to bring more guests in the door, build and grow direct relationships with their customers, access best-in-class CRM, and drive profitability through smarter marketing.”

These moves are poised to help DoorDash edge out food delivery rivals, including Uber.

Uber’s Moves

Uber is playing the same game as DoorDash, especially with its latest announcements.

Through an SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) Form 8-K filing on May 6, 2025, Uber revealed plans to acquire an 85% controlling stake in Trendyol GO, an online meal and grocery delivery business in Turkey, through an investment of approximately $700 million in cash.

Expected to close in the second half of 2025, the acquisition is subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions.

Trendyol GO serves customers across Turkey with groceries and meals from over 90,000 restaurants and markets via 19,000 couriers, and once the deal is completed, the Trendyol GO app will continue to serve customers, merchants, and couriers, with Uber introducing key capabilities from Uber Eats, its global delivery platform.

“Uber and Trendyol GO coming together will elevate the delivery sector in Türkiye for consumers, couriers, restaurants and retailers, especially small and family-owned businesses,” said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Uber. “This deal reflects our long-term commitment to Türkiye, we’re incredibly impressed with what the Trendyol GO team has built, and we’re excited to continue that strong momentum across the country.”

Uber also announced a partnership with Family Dollar, one of America’s most trusted discount retailers in over 5,000 locations, which will bring Uber Eats users access to its broad selection of affordable household items—from cleaning supplies and pantry staples to beauty products and baby care—delivered directly to their door, on-demand or scheduled.

“This partnership expands affordable access to everyday items while giving people even more ways to shop smart, save time, and stay on budget,” said Hashim Amin, Uber’s Head of Grocery and Retail in North America.

The move also marks a major milestone in Uber’s mission to make everyday essentials more accessible and affordable.

Do you think Uber’s moves will help it capture a better position in the global food delivery market, or do you think DoorDash’s acquisitions will generate more impact?
