Did You Miss These Recent AI Breakthroughs Amidst The OpenAI Leadership Chaos?
Updated on Thu, Nov 23, 2023
Starting off with OpenAI, it was revealed that just before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's abrupt departure and consequent return, a group of researchers wrote a letter to the board, exposing a potentially devastating AI technology that might have dire consequences for mankind.
Important factors in Altman's eventual dismissal from the board included the secret letter and developments in an AI software called Q*. Some at OpenAI believe Q* (pronounced Q-Star) could refer to a breakthrough in artificial general intelligence, or AGI, according to a report by Reuters.
While the contents of the letter to the board are confidential, OpenAI recognized it in an internal message that made mention of the Q* project. More details will come out soon, as the company seems to be returning to normalcy with Sam Altman and Greg Brockman back at the AI startup.
Yet, while OpenAI was facing various issues, other businesses have been up racing ahead in the AI world.
What Have Other AI Businesses Been Up To In The Last Few Days?
Anthropic’s Claude 2.1
In an effort to take advantage of its primary competition, OpenAI, facing various problems, Anthropic has released Claude 2.1, an updated version of their AI model. With its 200,000 token context window, Claude 2.1 is marketed as a more dependable option. It can process long documents and reduces hallucinations and false claims by 50%. The new features introduced by Anthropic, which include system prompts for customization and increased compatibility with business processes, highlight the company's dedication to AI safety. In the ever-changing world of natural language processing, Anthropic presents itself as a reliable alternative to OpenAI. With this launch, Anthropic is stepping up its AI game to compete with industry heavyweights for a leadership position at the Generative AI table!
Adobe’s Text-to-video Platform Acquisition
A number of steps are being taken by Adobe to strengthen its generative AI capabilities. An internal memo revealed the acquisition of Rephrase, a text-to-video company based in California. The exact amount of the acquisition is unknown at this time but the move will undoubtedly bolster Adobe's Creative Cloud product line, which has been progressively integrating generative AI enhancements. As part of its partnership with Adobe, Rephrase will enhance its generative video capabilities.
Rephrase is well-known for its platform that lets people make professional videos using digital avatars. Ashray Malhotra, CEO of Rephrase, confirmed the purchase but did not reveal who bought the company. Joining forces with Rephrase, a leader in generative AI video technologies, Adobe is well on its way to broaden its AI-powered products.
Nvidia And Genentech Accelerate AI-driven Drug Discovery
Technology giant Nvidia and Genentech, a Roche Group company, announced they will be entering a multi-year strategic collaboration to advance the use of generative AI in drug discovery. Through this partnership, Genentech will combine its models and datasets with Nvidia's AI computing stack, leveraging offerings such as DGX Cloud and BioNemo. Nvidia aims to assist Genentech's scientists in optimizing and scaling their models to expedite drug discovery processes.
Genentech, a pioneer in leveraging molecular biology for drug development, sees the collaboration as a way to turbocharge the discovery and design of therapeutics by uncovering patterns in vast datasets. Nvidia's DGX Cloud and BioNemo will provide dedicated AI supercomputing instances and optimization tools for Genentech researchers, aiming to accelerate the time to value in drug discovery. The collaboration seeks to enhance custom algorithms and gain insights into AI challenges in drug discovery over the next few years.
