Dear Artists, Did You Hear The Big News?

Louise Bourgeois says “An artist can show things that others are terrified of expressing.” The big breaking is AI, AKA Artificial Intelligence, is all set to emerge as a helping hand for dear, dear artists. Confused? AI Art is all set to revolutionize the world of art. The big breaking hatched on 5th January and stirred a question – who wins or loses in this generative AI art boom?

Let’s look at the brighter side: There’s no doubt that AI is growing in popularity and so are the number of artists who cater to various parts of the AI art creation process. For instance, Mario Klingermann and Helena Saring are using AI to create thought-provoking art that might not be possible without the assistance of AI. Another example is 2018, a 2018 release by Memo Akten, which was produced entirely through the latent space of a deep neural network in 2018 and regularly gives speeches on the intersection of art and AI. An artist named Ammaar Reshi published a book children’s book Alice and Sparkle written and illustrated by AI. According to the artist he spent the weekend playing with ChatGPT, MidJourney and other AI tools, later he combined all these AI tools and came up with this book. (Curious to know how this book looks? Here’s the snapshot.)

On the other hand, many commercial artists fear that AI art generators are going to replace them. Apart from that, these AI platforms are quickly growing in popularity because of their instantaneous support and budget-friendly advantage. Also, the debate on copyright, ownership, and AI art has resulted in the broader question of attribution – whether art produced by generative AI models is more human or more machine. Some of the images are created entirely by generative programs but these programs were trained on a network of creative artists. There’s a sense of dilemma of who owns what now; it would be even more difficult to determine this in the future.

Another illustrator of children’s books - Adriane Tsai took to Twitter, “The main problem to me about AI is that it was trained off of artists’ work. It’s our creations, our distinct styles that we created, that we did not consent to being used.”

However, there are some artists and designers who are embracing AI art and are using it to revolutionize their creative workflows. It is also a fact AI won’t completely shadow human artists anytime soon. At least, people will continue to contribute to curation, selecting the AI-generated images that best suit creative objectives. What’s your view on this battle of artists v/s AI?
