It’s no surprise that artificial intelligence (AI) applications are in demand, considering they offer capabilities such as natural language queries and generative AI. Almost every business is trying to infuse AI offerings into its processes and platforms, especially data-driven organizations.

One popular way to do this is to acquire AI startups or established companies that already have a stronghold in the sector.

Keeping to this thought, Databricks, an American software company and leader in the data lakehouse industry, announced a new acquisition to add to its $100 million purchase of Arcion, as it looked to build a data empire.

So, what is the new acquisition about and what will it do for Databricks? Let’s explore!

What Did Databricks Announce?

  • “At Databricks, we believe that AI will change the way that enterprises interact with their data,” this is how Databricks opened its announcement conveying they acquired the team behind the natural language data notebook Einblick.
  • Founded by Emanuel Zgraggen, Philipp Eichmann and other researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brown University, Einblick has been engaged in building an AI-native collaboration platform that helps users solve data problems with just one sentence.
  • Ahead of this, the platform also writes and fixes code, plots beautiful charts, builds models, and much more.
  • The move comes as Databricks takes note of the introduction of data intelligence platforms, a blooming generation of data systems powered by GenAI capabilities the company believes to be the future of the industry.
  • This new concept includes data platforms will inherently possess the ability to provide natural language interfaces, enabling non-expert or amateur users access powerful data insights and information.
  • Additionally, it will also provide expert users with better operability and high-quality answers.
  • Furthermore, Enblick created state-of-the-art techniques that can translate natural language questions into the code, charts and models needed to generate insights.
  • Databricks believes “the ideas behind Einblick can be more powerfully extended through deep integration with the underlying data catalog.”

What Did Stakeholders Say?

  • Emanuel Zgraggen, CEO and Co-founder of Einblick, said, “When we founded Einblick, our goal was to empower companies to do more with data, by creating the easiest and most collaborative data platform.”
  • [Contd.] “Today marks a significant milestone as we join forces with Databricks to further our mission. I am thrilled to embark on this new journey with a company whose mission is to simplify and democratize data and AI.”
  • Speaking about the acquisition, Databricks executives Ali Ghodsi, Ted Tomlinson, Patrick Wendell, Prem Prakash and Cassie Miao conveyed through a blog post, “We're excited to welcome the Einblick team to Databricks. Einblick was founded by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Brown University, whose research explored the boundary of Machine Learning, Human-Computer Interaction, and Natural Language Processing.”
  • [Contd.] “The Einblick team has spent the last four years building an AI-native collaboration platform that helps users solve data problems with just one sentence. We are excited for the Einblick journey to continue at Databricks!”

Databricks concluded the announcement by saying, “We’re thrilled to welcome Emanuel, Philipp and the talented Einblick team to Databricks. Like us, they believe that organizations need to deeply leverage data and AI to be successful in this new age.

“We look forward to incorporating Einblick's innovative, AI-native approach directly into the Databricks platform, enabling organizations to democratize data intelligence and create the next generation of data and AI applications with quality, speed and agility.”

Do you think Databrick’s latest move has given it an edge over its competitors in the data analytics landscape? Do you think other companies engaged in the sector should make similar acquisitions to power their data management?
