Cyber Threats And System Failures Impact Japan, UK, South Korea And Australia

Cyberattacks are increasingly targeting the core of major industries, and Japan’s Asahi Group Holdings has become its latest victim. The brewer, best known for its Asahi Super Dry beer, confirmed that it has been unable to restart production at its factories due to a cyber incident, with no timeline anticipated for recovery.
The attack interrupted order processing, shipping, and call center services across Asahi’s group companies in Japan. While operations remain down, the company emphasized that no personal data leaks have been detected.
Asahi operates 30 domestic plants producing beer, soft drinks, and food products. In addition to its flagship beer, Asahi owns household names like Nikka Whisky and Mitsuya Cider.
A spokesperson said the matter is still under investigation, and it remains unclear whether all factories have been forced to halt production.
The disruption highlights how modern cyberattacks can extend far beyond data theft, bringing production lines and supply chains to a sudden halt.
With the investigation ongoing, Asahi is under pressure to restart its factories. For now, Japan’s biggest beverage maker is dealing with a sudden halt that could quickly impact supply chains.
Well, this incident is not isolated, as cybercriminals are striking far more vulnerable targets.
After recent cyberattacks on Jaguar Land Rover, Collins Aerospace, and Marks & Spencer, hackers have now targeted London nurseries.
Kido International, which operates 18 sites in Greater London, was hit by a cyberattack that exposed data of over 8,000 children.
The gang behind the breach, Radiant, has already published the names, photos, addresses, and family contact details of 10 children as proof. They have also threatened to leak more, saying, “Next steps for us will be to release 30 more 'profiles' of each child and 100 employees.”
Kido International has not issued any statement yet. Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police stated in a statement, “Enquiries are ongoing and remain in the early stages within the Met’s Cyber Crime Unit.”
In messages sent via an encrypted channel, the hackers claimed to have been inside Kido’s systems for weeks and stated they were based in Russia but provided no evidence. They also declined to reveal how much money they are demanding.
Security officials sharply criticized the incident. “Cybercriminals will target anyone if they think there’s money to be made, and going after those who care for children is a particularly egregious act,” said Jonathon Ellison of the National Cyber Security Centre, part of Britain's GCHQ spy agency.
Meanwhile, beyond cybercrime, even system failures are putting critical services at risk.
South Korea is struggling to restore even 10% of its critical digital services after a fire at a government data centre in Daejeon triggered widespread outages. The incident has raised serious questions about the country’s backup systems, despite its status as one of the world’s most wired nations.
The fire broke out on Friday during routine maintenance at the National Information Resources Service. It disrupted around 647 government systems, from police and fire services to customs and even the safety ministry. By Monday, only 62 systems had been restored online.
Platforms like Government24, postal services, and tax systems are gradually recovering, but officials warned it could take at least four weeks to fully restore 96 of the most heavily damaged systems.
Safety Minister Yun Ho-jung said, “We see services restoring every hour,” while President Lee Jae Myung apologized for the disruption, noting it was troubling that stronger backups were not in place, especially after similar outages in 2022 and 2023.
Investigators suspect the fire began with an expired LG Energy Solution battery. According to experts, the episode highlights the need for improved contingency planning for infrastructure that supports essential national services.
Elsewhere, telecom outages have raised questions about the resilience of another key infrastructure service.
Australia’s second-largest telecommunications operator, Optus, is facing fresh scrutiny after another outage disrupted emergency calls, just 10 days after a major network failure that may have contributed to four deaths.
The latest issue was caused by a faulty mobile tower in Dapto, south of Sydney, leaving around 4,500 people without service on Sunday morning. Optus said the problem was fixed and confirmed with police that all emergency callers during the outage were safe.
"This can't happen again. This is an absolutely shocking failure from Optus," Treasurer Jim Chalmers said.
These four separate incidents show how fragile critical systems are in today’s world, with cybersecurity incidents increasing in scale and frequency. Businesses and governments across the globe are taking notice and taking steps to protect themselves from hackers and bad actors.
The question remains: should organizations operating critical services and infrastructure be investing more towards resilience? Should backup systems be made mandatory for telecom, data centers, and other sensitive services?
