In a bid to take the lead in the artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) race, businesses are creating unique techniques to deliver highly capable AI systems, generative AI models and powerful AI technology products that can be used for specific tasks.

The industry is generating several startups that are catching the eye of established AI companies, investors and venture capitalists.

One of these promising moves includes newly formed AI company Contextual AI, which has caught the interest of numerous investors, leading to the company announcing something exciting not just for the company but also for enterprises, job seekers and the industry.

So, what did Contextual AI reveal about its latest move? Let’s explore!

What Did Contextual AI Announce?

  • Through a news release published on its website, Contextual AI announced that it had raised $80 million in a Series A funding round.

  • The round was led by existing investors Greycroft and other seed investors, which included Bain Capital Ventures (BCV), Lightspeed, Lip-Bu Tan, Conviction/Sarah Guo and Recall Capital.

  • It also saw new investors such as Bezos Expeditions, NVentures (NVIDIA), HSBC Ventures and Snowflake Ventures.

  • This funding follows one the company had just over a year ago, in which it raised $20 million in seed funding.

  • The new funding will help the company scale its operations, accelerate its go-to-market and meet the surging demand for AI in enterprises worldwide.

  • It will also allow the company to grow its RAG 2.0 (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) technology-powered platform, an end-to-end, optimized platform that enables enterprises to build state-of-the-art RAG 2.0 applications in minutes.

  • The move will also see the company add Greycroft partner Marcie Vu as a board member.

What Did Greycroft Partner Marcie Vu Say?

  • Marcie Vu, Greycroft Partner, said, “We are thrilled to deepen our partnership with Contextual AI and founders Douwe and Amanpreet to seize a generational market opportunity.”

  • “When Greycroft invested in their seed financing, we foresaw the potential of RAG technology to revolutionize AI in the enterprise.”

  • “CEO Douwe Kiela, who pioneered RAG at Meta in 2020, and his team have since garnered recognition from customers and top talent for their unparalleled expertise.”

What Does Contextual AI Do?

  • Having launched just over a year ago, Contextual AI has deployed its RAG 2.0 technology-powered enterprise AI platform in production with leading Fortune 500 companies.

  • Its platform enables businesses to build RAG 2.0 applications that are fully customizable using end-to-end machine learning (ML).

  • The platform is available for deployment from the company’s secure SaaS infrastructure or on-prem within their own environment, where enterprises can bring the model to their data.

  • Still in its early stages, the company was co-founded by Douwe Kiela (CEO), who studied at Cambridge and Stanford, worked at Microsoft Research, Meta/Facebook AI Research and Hugging Face and was one of the pioneers of RAG technology, along with Amanpreet Singh (CTO), a close collaborator at both Meta and Hugging Face.

  • Contextual AI’s focus is centered around ‘Systems Over Models’, where “key to delivering effective enterprise solutions lies in contextualizing the language model” and ‘Specialization Over AGI’ as “specialization will always be more impactful than one-size-fits-all generalist solutions.”

  • This approach formed the basis of its Contextual Language Models (CLMs), which were trained using RAG 2.0.

  • “CLMs power the Contextual AI Platform, delivering applications that are more accurate and have better grounding than is possible with naive RAG implementations.”
