Cybersecurity firm Trend Micro discovered a new ransomware strain dubbed "Charon", targeting the public and aviation sectors in the Middle East.
The attack exhibited advanced persistent threat (APT) tactics like DLL side-loading, process injection, and evasion of endpoint detection software.
Researchers noted a striking resemblance to China-linked Earth Baxia, although attribution remains inconclusive.
Charon relies on legitimate Edge.exe binary to sideload a malicious msedge.dll to deploy the ransomware payload. Its capabilities include terminating security services, deleting shadow copies, partial encryption, and multithreaded operations for faster execution.
A component sourced from the open-source Dark-Kill driver hints at an unfinished BYOVD (bring-your-own-vulnerable-driver) feature to disable security tools.
Plus, customized ransom notes tailored to victims suggest targeted intent, not random exploitation.
Experts say this represents a convergence of nation-state tactics and ransomware motives, blurring the traditional lines in cybersecurity.

Russian Intelligence Suspected In Breach Of US Federal Court Filing System
US officials are investigating a long-running breach of the federal court document system, believed to be partly orchestrated by Russian actors.
The system manages sealed legal documents, including cases of national security, raising fears of intelligence leaks and source compromise.
The Justice Department issued urgent memos advising courts to remove sensitive documents from Public Access to Court Electronic Records (PACER), the public court document system.
Breaches were discovered in at least eight federal districts, with sealed criminal cases reportedly accessed or targeted. Some judges have been instructed to upload sealed records to offline systems, including local-only drives, in response.
Although Russia is a prime suspect, investigators have not ruled out multiple foreign intelligence agencies.
The breach has reignited debates about the long-known vulnerabilities in the US court system’s electronic case management systems. However, the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts has rolled out multi-factor authentication, travel-based access restrictions, and manual filing processes for certain districts to prevent future breaches.
Meanwhile, across the Pacific, cybersecurity concerns take a different shape—as China raises alarms over potential backdoors in the hardware powering the AI revolution.
China Questions The Security Of NVIDIA And AMD AI Chips
The Cyberspace Administration of China, the national internet regulator of the nation, is demanding that NVIDIA prove its AI processors are free of backdoors, particularly the H2O series.
This comes shortly after the US softened its AI chip export restrictions, allowing less advanced chips to be marketed to China, with a 15% licensing fee for the US government.
Chinese state media claim that NVIDIA’s AI chips pose data theft and remote shutdown risks, potentially discouraging their use in national security environments. In response, NVIDIA’s Chief Security Officer stated firmly: “There are no backdoors, no kill switches, no spyware in our chips.”
China’s skepticism is rooted in past events, such as the NSA's backdooring of Cisco routers and revelations of Huawei’s secret access channels.
Yet, security experts say that AI chip backdoors, if real, could be nearly impossible to detect due to minimal code footprints and plausible deniability. The allegations may also be a strategic move on China’s part to build an independent chip ecosystem, reduce dependency on US-made chips, and counter US export control measures.
