Businesses Must Be Careful About Security Gaps In Content Collaboration Platforms!
Updated on Tue, Nov 21, 2023
A recent report sheds light on one such type of tool - content collaboration tools, that have injected a dose of lightning into business operations, fostering accessibility across devices and locations for seamless teamwork. A report predicted that by 2027, the global enterprise content collaboration market will hit the $33.3 billion mark.
The impact on productivity? Immense!
Yet, amidst this productive and convenient collaboration, lurk dark, dark cybersecurity threats.
Right from Intel's downfall paving the way for hackers to Microsoft being under fire as hackers gain access to email accounts of government officials, hackers have upped their game and content collaboration platforms are no exception to it. Hackers are venturing into the world of these platforms with more sophisticated and elusive threats. It's not just dodgy Word docs or sneaky PDFs anymore; even innocent-seeming GIFs can be trojan horses for malicious content. Who would've thought, right?
In fact, according to Statista, the count of cybercrime across the globe is anticipated to surge in the coming years - rising from $8.44 trillion in 2022 to $23.84 trillion by 2027.
That sounds alarming but what does it have to do with content collaboration tools?
- Well, according to the report, content collaboration platforms as fantastic as they are, aren't the rock-solid fortresses businesses perceive them to be. Sure, they come with security measures but not all are equipped to combat those sneaky, unforeseen threats.
- Take enterprise-grade collaboration platforms, for instance. Some rely solely on antivirus software to ward off malicious uploads. Sounds good, right? Not quite. These antivirus tools and programs are like guards trained to catch known threats but can't keep up with the ones that haven't been discovered yet—zero-day threats. It's akin to playing whack-a-mole blindfolded, hoping you hit the right one.
So, is there any way to stay secure?
- To begin with, shake off the assumption that collaboration platforms are impervious safe havens. Businesses must acknowledge the risks and take proactive measures to fortify these digital spaces against malware intrusions. Intrusion detection systems, DDoS protection, personal data protection etc., can be great measures to protect against such threats.
- Then comes training - businesses must ensure their teams are trained enough to spot the difference between a phishing attempt and a genuine action. Employees need to know the signs of potential threats and how to navigate content collaboration tools safely to close the “human risk” angle.
In a nutshell, content collaboration tools are a boon for productivity but a potential playground for cyber trickery.
Do you think leading players in cybersecurity will be able to come up with a solution to safeguard such tools? What steps can businesses take to prevent such cyber risks?
