Okay, that was a pretty engine-ous build-up there – and a news like this deserves it!
Well, according to the latest report, BMW and Mercedes, two automotive titans, are on their way to launching the biggest EV push to thwart the escalating competition from Chinese automakers and close the gap on the American giant, Tesla.
BMW and Mercedes unveiled these moves at the prestigious IAA Mobility motor show in Munich, Germany. European car manufacturers, who had been seen as trailing behind Chinese firms such as Warren Buffett-backed BYD and Elon Musk's Tesla, are now racing against time to demonstrate their readiness to be formidable contenders in the electrifying era of automobiles.
Let's see how Mercedes-Benz is driving home its commitment!
-
Mercedes-Benz, making headlines at the event, proudly presented its Concept CLA Class – an electrifying masterpiece constructed on an innovative platform designed to underpin the German automotive giant's future electric vehicles (EVs). The star attraction here is the astounding range, boasting 750 kilometres (466 miles) on a single charge. The capability to cover 400 kilometres with a brief 15-minute recharge is even more impressive!
-
This remarkable feat is achieved by utilizing the Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture (MMA), a groundbreaking platform tailored for electric cars. The forthcoming range will encompass four exciting models, including a four-door coupé, an estate and two versatile sports utility vehicles. Mercedes-Benz CEO, Ola Kallenius was brimming with enthusiasm, labeling it a "revolutionary development" and asserting that "there's nothing in that class that can match that."
That was about Mercedes-Benz; what's BMW's vision behind shifting gears and electrifying the automotive world?

-
Not to be outdone, BMW showcased its "Vision Neue Klasse," an electrifying concept car that serves as a striking testament to the company's EV aspirations. The "Neue Klasse" represents BMW's avant-garde architecture for its electric vehicles, with production slated to commence in 2025.
-
BMW CEO Oliver Zipse proudly declared, "In only two years' time, these cars will hit the road and with that, overall, we lead BMW to a new era of innovation and sustainability." Zipse unveiled plans to double BMW's EV sales within the year, with a lofty goal that by the end of 2023, 15% of BMW's global sales will be battery EVs.
In a nutshell, the dedicated EV platforms of Mercedes and BMW represent a significant departure from previous approaches, where they would retrofit combustion engines or hybrid models with batteries. Seems like they are leaving no stone unturned in their electric journey.
On the other hand, while these announcements are undoubtedly monumental, according to analysts’ reports, Mercedes and BMW may still need to catch up to the trailblazing Tesla. Yet, with their electrifying innovations, both automakers are signaling their unwavering commitment to electrification and pursuing a sustainable automotive future.
Who do you think will emerge as the true frontrunner in the global electric vehicle race?
