Bluesky Promotes Itself On Threads As Rival Meta Struggles With Moderation Troubles

In the past few years, various social media platforms have gotten into trouble for posing health risks for people, particularly children.

Recently, TikTok got pulled up by over a dozen state Attorney Generals for allegedly harming the mental health of children, as well as causing them to become addicted to such platforms and more concerns.

Similarly, Instagram and Threads' parent company Meta has gotten into trouble over similar issues, facing the brunt of legal officials last year for intentionally making their social media platforms addictive to children.

In a bid to protect its users from harmful effects and content, Meta has taken some stringent measures, including disabling or suspending the accounts of minors.

However, this move hasn’t gone down as planned, seeing as the company has begun suspending the accounts of people suspected of being minors, even after providing sufficient information about being an adult.

Such was the case of Umar Shakir, a news writer for The Verge.

According to Shakir, he opened his Instagram app to find his account was disabled by Meta for being under 13 (Suffice it to say, he was well over 13).

This came with a message informing him he had 30 days to appeal the case, to which he provided a copy of my state ID.

Yet, after reviewing the ID, Meta stuck with their decision saying he was underage.

“Our technology found your account, or activity on it, doesn’t follow our rules. As a result, a member of our team took action,” read Meta’s moderation message. Just like that, his account was lost, along with connections made along the way and all the posts he put out.

Similar trivial issues have led to other accounts being suspended on Meta’s Instagram and Threads, where the platform’s moderation has led to widespread troubles for users.

Unsurprisingly, this led to the currently trending topic “Threads Moderation Failures” on Threads, where numerous people are voicing their grievances and asking for updates on their unfair suspensions.

Amid all this, Instagram and Threads head Adam Mosseri replied to some complaints, offering them assurances that he’ll look into their problems.

Meanwhile, Threads’ rival and popular social media site Bluesky is having a field day on Threads.

This is because it’s self-promoting itself on the platform, saying, “Your social experience should be yours to customize, not bent to the whims of whoever the owner of the platform is.” This was sported with a link leading users to its platform.

The move came as victims of Meta’s unfair and incorrect moderation initiative touted Bluesky as an alternative to Threads, one that doesn’t come with the inconsistent and unfair suspensions that Meta has been engaging in.

As a result, Threads’ rival Bluesky joined Threads, with its first post reading “👋 heard people were talking about us ... so we created an account to share some more information!”

This was followed by a string (get it?) of posts that explained Bluesky’s moderation policies.

Next, the company began self-promoting itself on Threads, while support for its account quickly grew.

“We're not like the other girls... we're not owned by a billionaire 🤪,” read another Threads post by the quickly growing social media platform.

Do you think Bluesky will be able to pull away users from Instagram and Threads? Do you think Meta will be able to solve their moderation issues and other problems without compromising on harmful content in time and retain their users?
