Just under two months ago, OpenAI unleashed this early demo of the GPT-3.5 series on the world. ChatGPT quickly made a name for itself as an aggressive conversational model, capable of answering follow-up questions, correcting itself and shutting down inappropriate requests. Since then, the AI world has been buzzing about ChatGPT and its possibilities.

Recently, Microsoft jumped on board, investing billions into OpenAI to keep the development momentum strong. Wait… here comes the competition! The morning of 30th January knocked in with a report by Reuters – China's internet search major, Baidu Inc, is all set to launch a tool similar to ChatGPT by March 2023! This report teased a discussion: Could the future open doors to similar tools like ChatGPT? Well, here’s what the market is telling us.
 

Will This Sparrow Chirp?

Talking about the competition to ChatGPT and not mentioning DeepMind is a big no! DeepMind is considering releasing its chatbot Sparrow in 2023. However, they are cautious and call Sparrow a research-based, proof-of-concept model. In a Time article, DeepMind's CEO and co-founder, Demis Hassabis, said that DeepMind is releasing its chatbot Sparrow in a 'private beta.' He also mentioned that it is 'right to be cautious' in its release, so that company can work on reinforcement learning-based features like citing sources – that ChatGPT is missing on!

On the other hand, Geoffrey Irving, a safety researcher at DeepMind and lead author of the paper introducing Sparrow, said Sparrow has a research-based, proof-of-concept model that is still 'not ready' and needs to be deployed!

Will Enterprises Applaud For Anthropic: Claude? 

In an article by the New York Times last Friday (somewhere in the last week of January), Anthropic, a San Fransisco Startup is close to raising roughly $300 million in new funding, which could value the company at around $5 billion! So, attention to all techies! The market might introduce a new AI player in town with a significant cash flow. Anthropic, which portrays itself as, 'working to build reliable, interpretable and steerable AI systems', created its future venture Claude based on 'Constitutional AI'. It is based on concepts such as beneficence, non-maleficence and autonomy.

Wait…hold on – the news doesn't end here! Recently, Anthropic has always been known for its deep pockets. Anthropic have always had money to burn. Besides, its whopping funding comes from Sam Bankman – Fried and the folks at FTX, which is now a bankrupt cryptocurrency platform accused of fraud! Anthropic and FTX have also been tied to the Effective Altruism movement, which was called out as a 'dangerous brand of AI safety' by Timnit Gebru in an interview with Wired.
