Anthropic has launched Claude Science, a new AI workbench designed to help scientists manage research workflows, analyze data, generate reproducible outputs, and work across complex scientific tools without switching between disconnected platforms.

Anthropic has introduced Claude Science, an AI workbench aimed at scientific researchers who need to move across literature, databases, code, compute resources, figures, manuscripts, and specialist tools.
The company says the platform brings these fragmented steps into one research environment, where scientists can analyze literature, execute multi-step research, refine figures, prepare manuscripts, and trace how outputs were created.
This is not a new AI model.
TechCrunch noted that Anthropic is positioning Claude Science as a workflow product rather than a specialized biology model. The product runs on the same Claude models already available to users, including Claude Opus 4.8, with no special access or separate gating.
That makes Claude Science different from approaches that rely on a purpose-built science model. Instead, Anthropic is trying to win over researchers by integrating the tools, connectors, databases, and compute environments they already use.
Claude Science gives researchers a general coordinating agent that can manage scientific work across more than 60 curated skills and connectors. These are pre-configured for areas such as genomics, single-cell analysis, proteomics, structural biology, and cheminformatics.
The system can also create specialist sub-agents or work with custom expert agents built by users. Anthropic says a reviewer agent checks citations and calculations, flags errors, and helps correct issues as the workflow progresses.
A major focus is reproducibility.
Claude Science can generate scientific artifacts such as 3D protein structures, genome browser tracks, chemistry drawings, figures, and manuscripts. When it creates a figure, it also includes the code, environment, plain-language description, and message history behind that output.
This matters because AI-assisted science raises a familiar concern: whether results can be traced, checked, and reproduced. Claude Science is trying to address that by keeping an auditable record of how work was produced.
The workbench can run locally on macOS or Linux, or connect to remote machines through SSH or an HPC login node. Anthropic says the tool can work on a lab’s own infrastructure, so sensitive or large datasets do not need to leave the systems where they already reside.
Anthropic says early beta users have tested Claude Science for tasks including single-cell RNA sequencing analysis, CRISPR screen design, protein structure prediction, and cheminformatics.
At the Allen Institute, neuroscientist Jérôme Lecoq used the platform to build a multi-agent computational review template. Anthropic said the system helped read through thousands of papers, extract central claims and quantitative findings, and create long-form reviews with citations checked by reviewer agents.
Stephen Francis, associate professor and epidemiologist at the UCSF Brain Tumor Center, used Claude Science to support molecular epidemiology studies around glioma. Anthropic said the tool helped his group complete comprehensive germline analyses in roughly one-tenth of the previous time, with results independently validated.
The launch also comes with broader research support. Anthropic will support up to 50 Claude Science AI for Science projects with up to $30,000 in credits, while Modal will provide up to $2,000 in compute for select projects.

Applications are open through July 15, 2026, with award notifications set for July 31, 2026. Projects will run from September 1 to December 1, 2026.
Anthropic is also launching its own pre-clinical drug programs focused on neglected diseases. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, said these are areas “outside the scope” of what traditional pharma and biotech may consider attractive targets, but still carry a real burden.
Claude Science is available in beta for Claude Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users. For Anthropic, the launch shows a clear strategy: not just building stronger models, but building AI workbenches for specific professional workflows.
