AMD’s $8.2 Billion World Labs Acquisition Expands Its AI Ambitions

AMD is going beyond simply supplying the chips that power artificial intelligence systems.

The company announced its agreement to acquire World Labs, an AI startup focused on spatial intelligence, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $8.2 billion.

Founded by Fei-Fei Li, Justin Johnson, Christoph Lassner, and Ben Mildenhall, World Labs is building Large World Models (LWMs), which are AI systems designed to perceive, generate, reason about, and interact with 3D environments.

The company's technology can generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D worlds, giving AI systems a richer understanding of physical spaces rather than limiting them to text, images, or other conventional inputs.
 

 

World Labs Brings Large World Models And Fei-Fei Li To AMD 

The acquisition also brings one of AI's most prominent researchers directly into AMD.

Fei-Fei Li will become AMD's executive vice president and chief scientist, while World Labs' team will join AMD and continue advancing its spatial intelligence technology.

“Spatial intelligence is the next frontier of AI, and we are thrilled to welcome Fei-Fei and the exceptional World Labs team to AMD,” AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su said.

Su added that combining World Labs' models with AMD's compute platforms could help build AI systems capable of understanding, generating, and interacting with complex environments.

For AMD, that potentially expands its AI position beyond processors and infrastructure into the models and technologies running on top of them.

World Labs' technology is intended to support applications spanning robotics, design, simulation, gaming, entertainment, and other areas where AI systems need to understand and operate within three-dimensional environments.

Li said the companies share “a vision for building AI systems that can understand, reason about and interact with the 3D world.”
 

AMD Plans To Combine Spatial Intelligence With Its AI Compute Platforms 

AMD plans to integrate World Labs' spatial intelligence technology with its existing AI hardware and software portfolio, positioning the combined capabilities as a foundation for more advanced AI systems.

The deal follows AMD's broader push to strengthen its AI business across hardware, software, and infrastructure. Bringing World Labs inside the company adds model development and spatial reasoning expertise to that strategy rather than relying solely on compute performance.
