AMD And Intel Group Up To Counter ARM's Dominance
Updated on Wed, Oct 16, 2024
Leaders such as NVIDIA and ARM Holdings are seeing themselves gathering a majority of the popularity within the industry, leaving others to reconsider their products and strategies.
In a counter move, industry bigwigs Intel and AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) have come up with a move that will leverage the might of a wide range of microchip manufacturers and companies.
What Move Did Intel And AMD Make?
Through a news release published on their websites, Intel and AMD announced the creation of an x86 ecosystem advisory group.
The group will focus on bringing together technology leaders to shape the future of the world’s most widely used computing architecture – Intel's x86.
Other than Intel and AMD, other founding members of the group include Broadcom, Dell, Google Cloud, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo, Microsoft, Oracle and Red Hat.
The advisory group will work together to shape the future of the x86 architecture, which forms the backbone of modern computing, especially in data centers and PCs. Its primary aim will be to expand the x86 ecosystem, allowing it to meet the emerging needs of customers more effectively.
Furthermore, the group will focus on compatibility across platforms and simplifying software development, enabling developers to create innovative and scalable solutions easily. This will include establishing a more enhanced and stronger set of architectural instructions and interfaces that make the x86 ecosystem more predictable, consistent and easier to develop.
The advisory group will gather input from both hardware and software communities, which will help define essential architectural features that meet industry needs.
How Will Intel And AMD’s Advisory Group Help?
The advisory group’s collaboration will lead to greater compatibility across Intel and AMD hardware, ensuring seamless interoperability between different platforms and devices. Essentially, this will improve the performance and flexibility of x86 architecture across various environments, which include cloud, client and edge devices.
The move will look to standardize architectural guidelines and interfaces, simplifying the software development processes.
It will also provide developers with clearer architectural instructions, allowing them to create more consistent and optimized applications that work across all x86 platforms.
The group will enable more efficient integration of emerging technologies, such as AI workloads, custom chiplets and advancements in 3D packaging – features that will be seamlessly integrated into operating systems, frameworks and applications.
Primarily, the advisory group will foster collaboration between microchip industry leaders, allowing them to remain competitive.
It will also benefit customers by expanding their choice of compatible hardware and software solutions, improving their overall computing experience.
What Did Intel And AMD Executives Say?
-
Pat Gelsinger, Intel CEO, said, “We are on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades – with new levels of customization, compatibility and scalability needed to meet current and future customer needs”
-
[Contd.] “We proudly stand together with AMD and the founding members of this advisory group, as we ignite the future of compute, and we deeply appreciate the support of so many industry leaders.”
-
Lisa Su, AMD Chair and CEO, said, “Establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues evolving as the compute platform of choice for both developers and customers.”
-
[Contd.] “We are excited to bring the industry together to provide direction on future architectural enhancements and extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.”
Ahead of this, CEOs from the founding members also spoke about the advisory group and what advantages and benefits it will offer.
Do you think Intel and AMD will be successful in their efforts to capture a stronger market share of the microprocessor market and challenge ARM?
