Amazon Takes AI To Hollywood By Introducing New Production Tools
Updated on Thu, Feb 5, 2026
TL;DR
- Amazon MGM Studios will begin a closed beta of AI tools for film and TV production in March.
- Focus is on efficiency and creative support, not replacing teams.
- AI use in Hollywood grows as industry debates its impact.
Amazon's AI Studio, which has been testing proprietary AI tools for TV and film production, is opening up a closed beta program in March to improve efficiency and reduce costs in Hollywood.
The focus has been on practical use cases like keeping characters consistent across shots and easing some of the workload in pre- and post-production. Now, those tools are ready for a wider test. The company says it plans to share early results by May, though it declined to go into further details.
Behind the scenes, the AI Studio has been working with experienced names from the industry. Collaborators include Robert Stromberg of Maleficent, The Big Bang Theory actor Kunal Nayyar, and former Pixar animator Colin Brady.
Amazon is also leaning on AWS for technical support and plans to work with multiple large language model providers.
Albert Cheng, who leads the AI Studios initiative, has been clear about the intent, which is to support creative teams and not to replace them. The emphasis, he says, is on improving efficiency and cutting costs, while also protecting intellectual property and preventing AI-generated content from being reused to train other models. One example already in play is Amazon’s House of David, which featured 350 AI-generated shots in its second season.
Topics For More Insights:
Still, the broader conversation around AI in Hollywood remains tense. Many creatives worry about job security, artistic control, and what these tools mean for the future of filmmaking. That debate is only growing louder as companies like Netflix also experiment with generative AI, including using it for a building collapse scene in The Eternaut.
Amazon’s AI step also comes alongside major layoffs, with the company cutting 16,000 jobs in January after eliminating 14,000 roles last October. As studios test these tools in real productions, the industry will be watching closely to see how far AI is allowed to go and at what cost.
