Johnston is widely recognized as one of Canada’s most respected technology executives and digital transformation leaders. Over a distinguished career spanning multiple decades, he has held senior executive leadership roles as Chief Information Officer (CIO) and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) across numerous federal government departments and agencies. He has led national-scale transformation programs, modernized critical IT infrastructures, strengthened cyber resilience strategies, and supported digital operations impacting millions of Canadians and critical government services. He was also recognized as one of Canada’s Top Tech Influencers in 2022 from IT World Magazine.

Johnston also served as President of the CIO Association of Canada (CIOCAN), where he championed innovation, leadership, and the advancement of Canada’s digital economy. His contributions to technology leadership and public sector modernization have earned him national recognition, including the prestigious CIOCAN Lifetime Achievement Award.
