Why Scaling AI Should Be Your Top Priority

Overall Rating
When I became Chief AI Officer at Schneider Electric, my mission was clear: implement AI into the heart of operations and steer away from experimenting with AI only in labs. Too often, organizations become captivated by the latest AI-driven innovation without asking the foundational question of “What problem are we solving?” This disconnect between shiny AI projects and real-world impact is why many initiatives fail to scale.

Through years of leading AI deployments globally, I’ve learned that success hinges on a pragmatic approach, one that prioritizes solving real business challenges, establishing frameworks for scale, and focusing on use cases that deliver measurable value. As AI continues to change right before our eyes, it’s important for leaders to learn and understand how they can shift their thinking to unlock its full potential in 2025 and beyond. This is crucial for AI in business growth.

Start With the Business Challenge

AI’s true value comes into focus when it’s deployed to address specific, tangible problems. For instance, we always begin by identifying the core business need, whether it’s optimizing energy use, reducing operational inefficiencies, or enabling smarter decision-making. Starting with the problem rather than the technology keeps us focused on creating solutions that matter.

For example, energy management solutions often rely on AI-powered algorithms to optimize building performance. But these initiatives don’t begin with a question like, “What can we do with AI?” Instead, we ask, “How can we reduce energy waste while maintaining performance?” This approach ensures that AI solutions are driven by purpose, not hype.

Data also play a critical role here. While perfect data are not a prerequisite to begin, organizations must ensure they have sufficient data quality and infrastructure to support their AI use cases. It’s also vital to align AI initiatives with organizational goals from the outset. Starting with the business challenge not only focuses efforts but also builds a stronger case for adoption across teams.

Build Structures That Enable Scale

Scaling AI requires more than technological expertise; it demands a structured approach that integrates AI seamlessly into the organization. In my own work, we adopted a hub-and-spoke model to ensure collaboration between centralized AI experts and domain-specific teams.

This model pairs technical specialists with business leaders, creating cross-functional teams that drive AI solutions from concept to implementation. For instance, our supply chain team worked with AI experts to develop predictive tools that optimize inventory across our global operations. This collaboration resulted in important savings and recognition by Gartner.

The hub-and-spoke structure also facilitates knowledge transfer and ensures that AI solutions address real-world needs. By embedding AI expertise into different business units, we’ve created an ecosystem where innovation thrives, and scaling becomes a natural progression. Frameworks like these are essential for breaking down silos, fostering cross-functional collaboration, and aligning AI efforts with strategic objectives. Without them, organizations risk ending up with isolated experiments that fail to deliver lasting value.

Another critical aspect of scaling is fostering a culture of continuous learning. Prioritize training employees at all levels to ensure they understand AI’s potential and limitations. This effort not only demystifies AI but also empowers teams to integrate it into their workflows confidently.

Prioritize Scalable Use Cases

One of the biggest pitfalls I’ve seen is organizations pursuing small AI experiments that don’t scale. While proof-of-concept projects are important, they must be designed with scalability in mind from the outset. The first step is to always ensure that every AI initiative has a clear path to scaling across your organization.

This requires shifting away from fragmented processes where one team develops the concept and another is tasked with scaling it. Often, organizations separate proof-of-concept teams from those responsible for full deployment, leading to gaps and delays. Instead, the same team should be responsible for taking projects from ideation to full deployment. This continuity accelerates scaling and ensures consistency.

For instance, an EV charger installation deployment project in California showcased how AI in business growth can address critical bottlenecks. By developing an AI-powered tool to assess home readiness for charging installation, we significantly reduced the time and expertise required, enabling faster adoption of renewable energy solutions.

This approach accelerates scaling and ensures that solutions remain aligned with the original business objectives, thus emphasizing the benefits of AI scaling for organizations.

Transforming the AI Conversation

With the AI boom showing no signs of slowing down, it’s easy to become enamored or overwhelmed with its possibilities. Remember, scaling AI isn’t about chasing trends or deploying flashy technologies. It’s about aligning AI with the most pressing business challenges you are facing and delivering solutions that create measurable value.

As leaders, we must resist the allure of the newest AI tools and focus on what truly matters to solve real problems, build scalable frameworks, and ensure alignment across teams. Again, by shifting the conversation from "What AI solution can I deploy?" to "What problem are we solving?" leaders can unlock AI’s true potential. This isn’t just about technology but about transformation. And transformation starts by asking the right questions.
