From Data-sure To AI-savvy: Unlocking The Next Stage Of Business Transformation

By Claire Nouet COO and Co-founderPathway

Overall Rating
Recent findings from McKinsey reveal a significant jump in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among businesses between 2023 and 2024. Despite 72% of businesses implementing AI in at least one business function last year, up from 55% the previous year, not all companies are truly ready to capitalize on AI’s potential. There can be a tendency among some businesses to intensify their focus on data practices to prepare for AI but then rest on their laurels. This is due to a common misconception that proficiency with data is the endgame for reaching full AI potential.

When business leaders are unaware of the further evolution required to become what I refer to as “AI-savvy,” progress is hindered. Mastery of the technology and the use cases that are best suited for it remains out of reach. To access AI’s transformative culture, data know-how needs to be backed by a broader grasp of AI’s capabilities and limitations and a culture of learning and experimentation championed by leadership.

Establishing The Bedrock Of Data

While being data-savvy isn’t synonymous with being AI-savvy, it is a crucial stepping stone. To effectively deploy AI, organizations must ensure they have robust data management practices and tooling in place. These foundations need to emphasize accuracy, data quality and strict governance. This is essential for maximizing the impact of AI applications within a business, both immediately and in the future.

Challenges exist in particular for companies that require AI applications to operate in real time. They need to transition to live data infrastructures that support models that learn and adapt continuously and facilitate the most accurate and timely outputs. Real-time is set to become the standard for AI systems, so all companies should be designing their data pipelines in a way that enables this. Otherwise, extensive re-platforming will need to happen further down the line.

Recognizing AI’s Actual Potential

As the AI hype momentum has been gathering, organizations have all too frequently rushed into investments in cutting-edge technology without giving suitability and necessity thorough consideration. There is a fine line between strategically adopting innovative tools to reach business goals and overspending on technology that doesn’t align with constraints and broader objectives. This is in part due to a disconnect between leaders’ aspirations for AI and what it can actually deliver. Often, the most sophisticated technology isn’t the most appropriate for the task at hand, and sometimes AI isn’t the answer at all.

A critical mindset needs to be followed during the AI tooling acquisition process, particularly when considering whether systems need to be built from scratch. While bespoke systems and their tailored outputs can have significant value, they come with high costs and deployment and maintenance complexities, especially as the market is developing so fast. Navigating these choices and distinguishing when a more price-effective off-the-shelf solution can deliver the desired results is a strong sign of an AI-savvy company.

Cultivating AI Enthusiasm In The Workforce

Progressing from data-savvy to AI-savvy requires a shift in business dynamics as well as tooling. AI integration flourishes under decisive and forward-thinking leadership and with cultures that are adaptable and excited to learn. Leaders need to foster environments where AI projects are not seen as purely experimental exercises, but rather where employees are empowered to use AI as an integral part of their day-to-day operations.

Leadership’s role in advocating for AI-savviness and being proactive in their decision-making cannot be understated. The old IT adage “nobody gets fired for buying IBM” no longer stands, and the real risk to executives’ positions lies in stagnation and a failure to explore more progressive strategies.

Employee engagement is another cornerstone of successful AI deployment. Without it, even the most sophisticated AI systems risk becoming obsolete. Prioritizing systems that guarantee relevance and accuracy is a crucial strategy to secure commitment to tools and prevent disenchantment as a result of misinformation. By giving employees timely, context-rich insights, business leadership gains their trust in the tech, which leads to overall gains in organizational efficiency.

Empowering Through Education

The value of AI investments is significantly eroded when deployment comes without appropriate accompanying educational initiatives. To effectively establish AI resources, comprehensive and always-evolving training and skills development are essential. Employees equipped with the right knowledge will leverage AI tools creatively and discover how to use them most effectively in the unique context of their role and company culture.

From Data Proficiency To AI Mastery

Becoming an AI-savvy organization means transcending the appeal of the latest technological innovation and cultivating an environment that values informed learning and strategic acquisition and application. It requires balancing foresight with practical data management and building a workplace culture that is creative and excited when it comes to using AI.

Being data-informed sets the stage, but the ultimate goal should be AI-savviness. Organizations that adopt this mindset will be poised to make the best decisions as AI becomes ever more embedded in operations.
