Overview

Water is essential to brewing, but most of it never ends up in the beer. At Carlsberg's Fredericia brewery in Denmark, around 60-65% of total water usage goes toward process needs like cleaning equipment, pipes, and bottling lines. As part of its Together Towards Zero sustainability program, Carlsberg set out to cut water consumption by 50% by 2030, and built a Total Water Management (TWM) plant to make it happen.

Working alongside Pantarein and Grundfos, Carlsberg developed an on-site treatment facility that purifies used process water and returns it to the brewery for reuse.

Key Stats & Highlights:
  • 560,000 m³ of water saved per year
  • 90% of process water recovered and reused
  • 2,000 m³/day treatment capacity
  • 9.6% energy reduction from biogas production
Grundfos supplied the majority of the pumps and dosing systems across the plant, including submersible wastewater pumps, dosing cabinets, and vertical multistage pumps for the reverse osmosis system, ensuring reliable, continuously monitored operation for a facility that needs to run around the clock.
