YouTube's Attack on Invidious: Will The Underdogs Prevail Or Be Silenced?
Updated on Fri, Jun 16, 2023
Since Invidious, an open-source "alternative front-end" to YouTube, allows viewers to watch videos without having their data recorded, YouTube has filed a cease-and-desist letter requesting that Invidious be taken down within seven days, citing a violation of YouTube's API policy as the reason.
The letter begins, "We recently became aware of your product or service, Invidious," and is available on the project's GitHub. Warning: "Your Client appears to be in violation of the YouTube API Services Terms of Service and Developer Policies."
The letter then details the specific policies that Invidious is said to have broken, such as failing to "clearly" describe what it does with user data and failing to include a link to YouTube's Terms of Service.
Unless they provide "significant independent value or functionality that improves users' interactions with YouTube," the letter states, “API clients must not place any limitations on the YouTube functionality required by the RMF [Requirements for Minimum Functionality for YouTube API Services]," or "mimic or replicate core user experiences."
The letter states, "We work hard to keep YouTube a safe, responsible community." "We hope that you will cooperate with us by correcting and ceasing to offer Your Client that violates our terms and policies within 7 days from the date of this letter," wrote Invidious developer TheFrenchGhosty.
While the future of remains uncertain, the project's developers are committed to protecting the privacy of their users, stating “May Invidious live and prosper, with, or without us.”
Marketed as a way to browse YouTube without giving the site access to personal information or creating an account, Invidious is open-source software released under the AGPL-3.0 license, safe from Google's prying eyes – as Invidious boasts on its webpage. YouTube makes most of its money from "annoying ads," which may be disabled with Invidious the company said.
According to TheFrenchGhosty, users are starting to rebel against these business moves. This week, thousands of subreddits went offline in opposition to Reddit's API fees. You can read more here.
In the GitHub post, the developers of Invidious state that they have no plans to alter the service's current functionality. "They don't understand that we never agreed to any of their TOS/policies, they don't understand that we don't use their API," TheFrenchGhosty said.
