Elon Musk founded his AI startup xAI in 2023, announcing his intention to join the AI race to take on players like OpenAI, Microsoft, Anthropic and others. Soon after the announcement, the company released Grok, a flagship generative AI model that now powers a number of features on Musk’s social media platform X.

Grok is accessible to X Premium subscribers and free users in some regions as a chatbot boasting image generation, query answering, diverse tone of responses and news summarization. With its ambition to scale xAI and Grok beyond X users, Elon Musk’s AI startup has made headlines again.

So, what did Elon Musk announce and what does it mean for the future of xAI?

Let’s explore!

What Did xAI Announce?

Elon Musk’s xAI announced that it had raised $6 billion in Series C funding, raising its total valuation to $50 billion. Only those who had backed xAI’s previous fundraising rounds were permitted to participate, with major names including Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, Sequoia Capital, Nvidia and AMD among others.

With this new infusion of cash, xAI will be able to improve its AI infrastructure and move forward with the development of Grok, its innoative AI chatbot. Not only its hardware but xAI has scaled from a dozen employees in March 2023 to over 100 employees by the end of 2024.

Investors gave a minimum of $77,593 in funds, with investors who helped Musk finance Twitter’s acquisition being given up to 25% of xAI’s shares.

So, why is xAI interested in raising so much cash?

What’s New With Grok?

XAI's cash infusion comes at a time when it is testing a standalone iOS app for its AI chatbot Grok. This is aimed to expand its accessibility beyond X (formerly Twitter) users. The app will be available in beta in select countries, allowing its users to access real-time data from the web and X, rewrite text, summarize long content and generate images from text prompts.

For instance, Grok’s image generator excels at photorealistic rendering and imposes fewer restrictions, allowing users to create images using public figures and even copyrighted material. Its is also more willing to answer controversial questions, with Musk calling it as “rebellious streak” that helps it answer “spicy questions that are rejected by most other AI systems.”

xAI is also preparing a dedicated website, Grok.com, to make the chatbot accessible via web browsers. This marks a significant step by the AI startup in reaching a broader audience outside of the X ecosystem. While Grok was exclusive to X Premium subscribers, xAI has recently rolled out free access to all X users, significantly increasing its user base.

So, what does this expansion of Grok, combined with xAI’s plans to raise more money next year, mean for xAI?

What Are xAI’s Future Plans?

With a totla of $12 billion raised this year, a major part of the cash will go toward expanding xAI's supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee. It has 100,000 Nvidia GPUs at the moment but the company wants to double the number of GPUs by 2025, which will make it easier to train and deploy AI models.

The Memphis plant recently received approval for 150MW of additional power, enabling further expansion as xAI pledged to improve local infrastructure. Musk has also indicated that xAI is training the next generation of Grok models at the Memphis facility and is planning additional features to integrate Grok more deeply into X’s platform.

Moreover, xAI’s generative AI models such as Grok will be integrated across Musk’s other ventures, such as Tesla and SpaceX, leading to better revenue prospects.

Conclusion

Elon Musk, founder of xAI, describes Grok as a “truth-seeking AI” with a rebellious streak, capable of answering questions that other systems avoid. In fact, in a recent lawsuit, Musk’s legal team accused OpenAI of engaging in anti-competitive practices, such as preventing investors from funding rivals like xAI.

Musk’s team argues that X’s data gives xAI a competitive edge, enabling it to train models on real-world user interactions and trending topics. Despite the competition, Musk remains confident in xAI’s ability to lead the AI race, pointing to its rapid growth, adoption and innovation as proof.

Do you think xAI’s advancements with Grok will disrupt the generative AI market? Can xAI challenge established players like OpenAI and Anthropic?
