In the last few years, the autonomous vehicle and electric vehicle (EV) industry has witnessed various stages of growth and shrinking.

While the adoption of such vehicles has increased, there have been questions surrounding the capability of autonomous driving vehicles and what constitutes “fully self-driving vehicles”.

As a result, many automakers and technology companies engaged in the field find themselves changing their approach, shifting their focus in research and development efforts and restructuring their organization workflows and personnel. Unfortunately, sometimes this means businesses looking to restructure must let go of employees.

Luminar, a leader in LiDAR sensors, made a similar announcement as the company looks to restructure as it shifts its focus in another direction.

So, what did the company say? Let’s explore!

What Did Luminar Announce?

  • Through a message written by Austin Russell, the founder and CEO of Luminar, announced the company was evolving and moving to a more “asset-light” model.

  • This includes outsourcing more of its industrial processes, enabling the company to move to market faster, foster flexible and rapid scaling, reduce overheads and boost profitability.

  • In a bid to reduce costs, the company will also be reducing its workforce by 20%, laying off full-time employees, many of which have been with the company for years.

  • The company has over 700 full-time employees in countries such as the US, Germany, Sweden, India and China, meaning the move would affect around 140 workers.

  • The company will also be letting go of a major chunk of its contractors.

  • The move comes as the company revealed that it officially achieved Start of Production (SOP) at global scale last month, after “a decade of intensive R&D, product development and industrialization.”

  • The company’s first production model is set to be the Volvo EX90.

  • Having achieved SOP, Luminar is at a crossroads where the core of the business is strong but faces challenges financially.

  • To date, the company has invested $1.8 billion to reach its vision to “democratize safety and enable autonomy”.

  • As per the company, the move will enable savings of over $400 million over the next five years.

  • Luminar is one of the leading companies engaged in LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, which includes transmitting laser lights from a source to collect its reflections that bounce off other objects.

  • The technology is used to determine the distance between the source emitter and objects or surfaces and find great applicability in self-driving vehicles.

  • However, Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, wasn’t a fan of the technology in 2019, when he said, "LiDAR is a fools' errand ... anyone relying on Lidar is doomed.”

  • Yet, as per Luminar’s Q1-2024 Financial Summary, Tesla was the company’s largest LiDAR customer in Q1, comprising of over 10% of its revenue in the quarter, which amounted to $21 million.

  • At the same time, Luminar posted a loss of $10.46 million in the first quarter.

  • While Tesla models don’t use LiDAR technology for its driver assistance system, Autopilot, it’s unclear what the automaker is using the sensors for.

What Did Luminar’s CEO Say?

  • Through a message published on Luminar’s website, Austin Russell, the company’s Founder and CEO, said, “Today, we are announcing an evolution in our business to a more “asset-light” model. The first step in this transition involves outsourcing more of the industrialization process to our existing partners.”

  • “This new structure will enable us to (a) accelerate our next-generation products to market, (b) enable flexible and rapid scaling with automakers beyond our current capacity, (c) drastically reduce cost overhead on industrialization activities and for our company at large, and (d) deliver strong profitability on unit economics.”

  • “Today marks the first major step in this shift, and I’ll be sharing more details on this evolution in the coming weeks.”

  • “This shift also means a substantial reduction in costs across the board. By far the most difficult and emotional decision has been to reduce our full-time employee base by roughly 20% which we announced today. Many of these team members have been on our journey with us for years, which is why this is so difficult.”

  • “We have also made the decision to roll off the majority of our contractors who supported us to SOP. We have informed the affected employees regarding the roles that are no longer required at this juncture.”

Do you think this move by Luminar will affect Tesla? Do you think Tesla might move to acquire some of the staff laid off by Luminar?
