Will Instagram’s New Feature Spell The End For Linktree?

Recently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made it official that Instagram users can now add up to five links to their bio on the app. He took to his Instagram account and wrote, “Probably one of the most requested features we’ve had.” #TimeToGetLinked
Creators are jumping with joy at being able to integrate external links into their Instagram profiles. Until now, they’ve had to put them all onto a landing page for links (such as Linktree) and then place that into their bio. Lia Haberman, a social media marketing consultant and instructor at UCLA, quotes, “For anyone who’s struggled to prioritize the link they include in their Instagram bio, this is a much-needed update.” #InstagrammersUnite
On the other hand, Meta’s move may ruin Linktree and the link-in-bio economy. Some tech experts even reacted to the news by tweeting clips from The Office of Michael Scott, shouting, “No god! No, god, please, no. No, no, noooooo!”
Some social media analysts even argue that introducing links is inevitable for a social media platform like Instagram.
“Meta was trying to experiment with people paying for things, on Instagram in particular—like their subscription features and now verification—so it seemed like a no-brainer to eventually allow multiple links and potentially even charge for it down the road,” says Greg Baroth, a Los Angeles–based digital marketing consultant who tweeted “RIP all the link in bio companies” when the feature was announced.
However, Instagram’s parent company, Meta, did not respond to a request for comments. #TheMysteryContinues
Besides, Lara Cohen, a former Twitter employee who has since become the vice president of partners and business development at Linktree, revealed Linktree’s “secret sauce,” which is its robust analytics and ability to track users as they click through the links in people’s bios. Although Linktree did not respond to a request for comment, it tweeted a screenshot of Meta’s Instagram profile, including a link to the company’s own Linktree.
Only time will tell whether this new feature will benefit Instagrammers. Do you think Instagram’s new feature is a powerful move to kill Linktree? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
