Will Gas-To-EV Conversion Steal The Show From EV Titans?
Updated on Mon, Jun 19, 2023
Wikipedia defines an EV as a vehicle propelled by one or more electric motors. Mckinsey stated in a report that governments and cities have implemented legislation and incentives to hasten the transition to sustainable mobility. By 2030, the European Union plans to have implemented its "Fit for 55" program, which aims to cut net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by aligning climate, energy, land use, transportation and taxation policies.
Even stats from Statista illustrate that the global market for EVs is expected to be worth $561.30 billion by the end of 2023. Moreover, by 2028, the global market sales for electric vehicles is projected to reach 17.07 million units!
The automotive sector is hence seen making the right choices by switching from producing conventional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine)-powered automobiles to EV’s, citing the transition to a cleaner and greener energy source for transportation.
Bentley CEO Adrian Hallmark said, “The future of Bentley will be fully electric. By 2030, no more combustion engines. We are not only working on one electric car but a full family of electric cars.”
Yet, why buy an EV when you can DIY? The new trend of IC-to-EV conversions is sweeping the industry!
Wikipedia says swapping out a gas-powered car's internal combustion engine for an electric motor and batteries is the newest automotive trend. As the cost of buying a new EV is very high compared to buying an existing internal combustion engine car that can be electrified later.
There are two major use cases for these kits: initially, adapting a gas-powered vehicle to run on a battery-powered electric engine that runs on eco-friendly fuel rather than petrol; second, to reduce the trash created when vehicles are scrapped because they are too old to be road-worthy.
One such forward-thinking firm is EV West, which is creating waves with its EV conversion kits that help transform cars from ICE to EV. Michael Bream, founder and CEO of EV West, told CNBC that “Being involved in electric cars right now is like being involved in computers in the ’90s ... we want this transition to sustainable fuels to be fun and exciting for people that are a part of car culture and automobile enthusiasts.”
Will the DIY trend become the road less travelled or a mainstream sensation? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
