Why hasn't Apple been mentioned yet in relation to AI? #FoodForThought
Well, the mystery has been resolved – let's go!
Artificial intelligence, more specifically the "generative AI" kind that can create writing, images and code that seem and feel human, is all anybody can talk about. Even the world's most influential technological businesses and tech-heads are speaking about it.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and his team used the term "AI" sixty-six times on conference calls following their quarterly earnings release this week. Microsoft's top brass, including CEO Satya Nadella, uttered this phrase 47 times. CNBC analyzed transcripts from Wednesday and found that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his senior team used the magic phrase 42 times.
On the other hand, Apple's CEO Tim Cook barely mentioned artificial intelligence at all during the company's earnings call in May. Although several new features were unveiled that were powered by AI, Apple never once used the phrase during its two-hour software launch event in June.
Instead, Apple's top brass prefers to use the term "machine learning," which has gained traction in the academic and professional communities.
Apple presents AI as an integral part of the product rather than the future of computing. Hence, Apple's AI is completely invisible to the user, given that their secret LLM called AppleGPT is still for internal use only (more details here!). Moreover, the company claims it doesn't feel the need to shout about AI as some of its competitors do.
So, if Apple can do it, why can't other businesses stay away from the allure of AI despite its future being unclear?
Finance head Amy Hood and CEO Satya Nadella both signalled to investors that the introduction of Microsoft's AI assistant, Copilot, will be "gradual."
The impact of the Copilot subscription on the company's revenue may not be clear to investors until next year. According to Nadella, "we'll start getting some of the real revenue signal from it in the second half of the next fiscal year."
Google and Pichai claim that the company's text-generating AI models will make Google Search even more useful and may even be able to provide answers to problems that can't be found via traditional Google Search. Ads created and served using generative AI would "supercharge" the company's current ads business, according to Pichai. He also noted that AI-generated search presents "opportunities" for new types of ads.
When asked how SGE may improve utilization of the search engine and, thus, increase income, Pichai said the business was experimenting and that it was still "early days" for the new AI-powered search. Pichai believes that Google is progressing in the right way thanks to positive customer input and improved metrics.
In regard to the usage of AI in virtual reality, ad targeting and content recommendation for accounts people don't follow, Zuckerberg was very enthusiastic.
A notion termed "AI agents," in which software may automatically communicate with business customers without a human being engaged, work as a coach, or be a personal assistant, was one he was particularly optimistic about.
Ultimately, "we just don't know how quickly these will scale," Zuckerberg admitted. He revealed that discussions were taking place within Meta about how much to invest in AI-related infrastructure.
So, is Apple playing it smart by not taking a bite of the AI wonder? Or is it behind Google, Microsoft, and Meta in the AI race? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
