Most of all, governments worldwide are looking to strengthen their infrastructure and strategies to avoid cyber-attacks like ransomware. With this in mind, the Australian government recently announced some stringent steps in this direction. What’s their revamped cybersecurity strategy about? Let’s explore!
What Did The Australian Government Announce?
- On November 22, the Australian Government released the 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy, which is a roadmap to help the country’s vision of becoming a world leader in cyber security by 2030.
- In an action plan also released the same day, the government said it would help enhance cyber security measures for small and medium businesses by offering advice, guidance and support.
- This would include conducting “health checks” and guiding them on how they can improve their cyber security and cyber resilience.
- Furthermore, it will also include working with industry to design mandatory ransomware incident and payment reporting, while simplifying incident reporting. It will also work to create a ransomware playbook on how to respond properly and promote access to trusted support after an incident.
- The plan also outlines methods that will be used to help Australian citizens defend themselves from cyber threats, which includes better awareness programs.
- It also highlights plans to deter such threats from attacking the country through building its law enforcement and offensive capabilities, while driving global counter-ransomware operations.
- Ahead of this, the plan includes securing identities, providing better support to victims of identity theft and helping them with recovery and damage mitigation.
What’s The Current Cyber Security Scenario In Australia?
- In the last year, almost half of the country’s population had personal data stolen in just two data breaches. #Scary
- Recently, a cyber-attack brought the country’s biggest port operator to a standstill, pausing supply chains.
- It’s believed that on average one cybercrime is reported every 6 minutes.
- Ransomware alone accounts for damages up to $3 billion to the Australian economy each year.
- In fact, the cost of cybercrime increased by 14% from mid-2022 to mid-2023 alone, with average costs amounting to $46,000 (small businesses), $97,200 (medium businesses) and $71,600 (large businesses).
- The country’s A$587 million ($382 million) plan is looking to curtail this, which was backed by companies, considering how a large part of them remain unprepared for cybercrime.
What Was Said About The Latest Cybersecurity Measures?
- In the strategy report’s foreword, Clare O’Neil, the Australian Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Cyber Security, said, “Cyber security is an urgent national problem, and we need to act now. After a decade of malaise, Australia has fallen behind. For too long, Australian citizens and businesses have been left to fend for themselves against global cyber threats.”
- [Contd.] “Over the last 12 months, I have engaged hundreds of business leaders, community representatives and cyber experts within Australia and from around the world. I have stepped into the security operations centres of some of the biggest Australian companies. I have spoken with small business owners, universities, not-for-profits, and community leaders.”
- “The one thing I have heard consistently is that Australians are demanding action on cyber. It is time for real and meaningful change,” O’Neil added.
Do you think other countries should follow suit and create more comprehensive strategies to tackle cyber-attacks? Do you think such plans should be updated yearly based on emerging cyber threats?
