US Gov Pours In $4.3Bn In Grants To Cut Climate Pollution
Updated on Tue, Jul 23, 2024
This has led to numerous businesses adopting greener production methods and sustainable materials in their products.
Moreover, the movement has drawn in governments, which have been implementing strict rules and regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
These rules build towards long-term solutions to reduce adverse environmental impacts, promote natural resources, improve waste management and cut back on our reliance on fossil fuels.
Furthermore, governments are also investing in businesses driving towards this cause, while promoting research and development of alternate energy systems.
Now the US government has made a similar move by announcing $4.3 billion in grants aimed at cutting climate pollution across the country.
So, how will this grant help and who are its beneficiaries? Let’s explore!
What Does The US Government’s $4.3 Billion Grant Include?
-
Through a news release published on its website, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) conveyed that the US Government announced $4.3 billion in grants to be distributed to 25 selected applications aimed at cutting climate pollution.
-
The aim is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, tackle climate change, improve air quality and advance environmental justice across the United States.
-
According to the release, the combined estimates provided by all selected applicants could help reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 148 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2030 and 971 million metric tons by 2050.
-
The funding comes as a part of the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants (CPRG) program.
-
The 25 selected applicants, which consist of individual and coalition applications, span 13 state applicants, 11 municipal applicants and 1 tribal applicant will fund projects in 30 states.
-
The area of focus will span six primary sectors: transportation, electric power, commercial and residential buildings, industry, waste and materials management and agriculture and natural and working lands.
-
The grants will boost the deployment of technologies and programs to reduce emissions and other harmful pollution, while also building infrastructure, housing, industry, competitive economy and employment, focusing on a clean energy future.
-
Ahead of this, the EPA expects to announce up to an additional $300 million in selections under the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program for Tribes, Tribal consortia and territories soon.
How Will The Grants Be Distributed?
-
As per a detailed news release, the distribution of the allocated grants will be broken up across six sectors.
-
The Transportation sector will get $1.18 billion to boost charging infrastructure and gain incentives to deploy a wide range of electric vehicles or EVs.
-
Electric Power will receive $372 million to boost renewable energy sources and incentives to deploy up to 19,000 megawatts of solar and wind generation by 2030.
-
Commercial and Residential Buildings will get $1.06 billion to improve energy efficiency in 250 public buildings and incentives for deploying 580,000 heat pumps and energy efficiencies in ~700,000 residences.
-
Industry will get $636 million to reduce methane emissions from coal mines and oil and gas production and more.
-
Agriculture and Natural and Working Lands is set to get $931 million to reduce nitrous oxide emissions and reforest, restore or protect coastal and forest lands and more.
-
Waste and Materials Management will utilize $121 million to capture methane from landfills and reduce emissions and to divert millions of tons of food and organic waste from landfills.
What Did US Government Officials Say?
-
EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan, said, “President Biden believes in the power of community-driven solutions to fight climate change, protect public health, and grow our economy. Thanks to his leadership, the Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program will deliver unprecedented resources to states, local governments, and Tribes to fund the solutions that work best in their communities.”
-
[Contd.] “Selected recipients have put forward ambitious plans to advance sustainable agriculture, deploy clean industrial technologies, cut emissions and energy costs in homes and commercial buildings, and provide cost- and energy-efficient heating and cooling to communities, creating economic and workforce development opportunities along the way.”
-
John Podesta, Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy, said, “President Biden’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants put local governments in the driver’s seat to develop climate solutions that work for their communities.”
