Threads Brings Web Messaging And Makes Desktop DMs Easier!
Updated on Wed, May 6, 2026
TL;DR
- Threads rolls out web messaging, bringing one-on-one and group chats to desktop users.
- The update adds a Messages tab, Requests section, and chat search for a smoother desktop experience.
- Messaging on Threads is growing fast, now reaching around 350 million DMs weekly with a 30% increase this year.
Threads is rolling out messaging on the web, bringing one-on-one and group chats to desktop users. The update aligns its web experience more closely with platforms like X and Bluesky.
The web version now includes a “Messages” tab that opens your DM inbox, along with a “Requests” section where you can view all incoming message requests. Users can also search messages and quickly start new chats, making the experience more streamlined for desktop use.
Connor Hayes, Meta’s head of Threads, said in a post that web messaging was the most requested feature from users after the company first introduced DMs in July 2025. “Our most engaged people spend time on web because they’re at their desks, tapped in, using Threads for longer sessions,” Hayes wrote in his Threads post. “A conversation app needs to work wherever you are, and now it does.”
The launch doesn’t come as a surprise, as Hayes had teased back in April that messaging would be coming to Threads’ web experience. Messaging has quickly become central to the platform, with users sending 30% more messages per week since the start of the year. Usage now averages around 350 million DMs weekly.
Topics For More Insights:
Threads is also expanding its features with Live Chats designed for real-time conversations during events. These chats allow up to 150 participants to actively send messages, while additional users can join as spectators, reacting to messages and participating in polls.
Since its launch in 2023, Threads has continued to evolve its platform to stay competitive. The addition of web messaging and Live Chats highlights its growing focus on conversations, moving beyond just posts and replies.
