As the capabilities and functions of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) continue growing, so do their use cases.

This is where experts in the sector come in to develop capable and powerful solutions across industries, including media and entertainment, marketing, operations, cybersecurity, content and more.

This also includes defense and security, which is where Thales, a French multinational company and CEA (the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission), a French public government-funded research organization find their latest partnership.

Thales is a global leader in advanced technologies specializing in Defense and Security, Aeronautics and Space and Cybersecurity and Digital identity, while CEA comes in as a major research organization offering solutions across energy, defense and security, information technologies and health technologies.

So, what does Thales’ and CEA’s partnership consist of? Let’s explore!

What Did Thales And CEA Announce?

  • As per a press release published on Thales’ website, the company announced that it has signed a new partnership agreement with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) to create trusted GenAI solutions to enhance intelligence and command applications.

  • The three-year renewable partnership will include Thales providing AI expertise and deep knowledge of the defense and security sector.

  • CEA will bring in its know-how in multimodal GenAI, which is based on based on text, images, audio, electromagnetic signals, structured data and other inputs, to enable the swift deployment of GenAI into solutions.

  • The idea is to offer capable solutions for Thales’ customers with critical mission requirements.

  • Additionally, the research teams at Thales and CEA will work together to deliver sovereign trusted AI solutions.

  • The move is boosted by Thales’ AI Lab’s reputation for being the most powerful integrated laboratory for critical AI in Europe as well as CEA being dubbed as one of the world’s most innovative research organizations.

  • With over 600 AI experts, Thales offers trusted, cybersafe, transparent, explainable and ethical AI for armed forces, aircraft manufacturers and critical infrastructure operators and is infusing AI into more than 100 of its products and services.

  • CEA, which is known as a key player in trusted AI for mission-critical systems, brings in a range of skills spanning algorithms, software development tools, computing architectures and microelectronics. Its hardware and software solutions, which are developed with academic and industry partners, offer high-quality and high-performance.

What Use Cases Does This Move Bring?

  • When it comes to the armed forces, GenAI can help accelerate OODA (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) command loops and help with sensing, data gathering, data transmission, storage, data processing and decision support.

  • Additionally, it can serve as a trusted smart virtual assistant for users, improving human decision-making and the speed of workflows.

  • GenAI can help intelligence gathering by simultaneously extracting, processing, correlating and interpreting different types of information collected from multiple sources, which can then be compiled into reliable reports or summarized to enhance information sharing.

  • Furthermore, the partnership will also see the two focus on interoperability within coalitions, simplifying communication between member states engaged in joint operations.

  • As per the release, this will “facilitate interaction between operators and complex systems by translating their intentions into a sequence of actions and translating technical terms into the languages of the various nations involved.”

What Did Stakeholders Say?

  • Bertrand Tavernier, Chief Technical Officer for Thales’s Secure Communications and Information Systems business, said, “This partnership with the CEA’s AI teams will combine the power of their research with our work at Thales’s AI accelerator, which brings together the Group’s technological expertise and deep knowledge of the defense and security sectors.”

  • [Contd.] “Our customers — governments, armed forces, critical infrastructure operators — need trusted, sovereign generative AI solutions for their critical missions.”

  • Alexandre Bounouh, Director of the CEA’s List Institute (specializing in smart digital systems), said, “This partnership builds on the long-standing collaboration between the CEA and Thales and extends it to the sensitive issue of generative AI, combining the expertise and excellence of the CEA’s research teams in AI safety and security with Thales's AI accelerator's strengths in the strategic domain of defence and security.”

  • [Contd.] “It will support the CEA’s mission in safety, security and artificial intelligence with our partners and all institutional and industry stakeholders in this field.”
