Samsung’s new Galaxy S25 series of smartphones was unveiled at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event, held on January 22, 2025.

In addition to launching the new series—Galaxy S25, Galaxy S25+, and Galaxy S25 Ultra—the leading consumer electronics manufacturer also spoke about Galaxy S25 artificial intelligence (AI) features and Samsung’s first Android XR (eXtended Reality) headset—Project Moohan.

A silent participant in this event that didn’t get much noise during the event was another phone from the S25 series that was only teased—the Galaxy S25 Edge wasn’t spoken about, but was on display.

Its USP? It's a surprisingly slim smartphone that was touted to be just 6.4mm thick at the time. In comparison, the regular Galaxy S25 is 7.2mm.

During the event, Samsung didn’t provide a pre-order option, pricing details, or even a release date for it.

That’s changed now.

On May 13, 2025, Samsung announced that the ultra-slim S25 Edge is available for pre-order, with an expected shipping date of May 23 in Korea and May 30 in the United States. Through the press release, Samsung also revealed the full specifications of the smartphone.

First off, it’s thinner than the initially believed 6.4mm. The Samsung S25 Edge is just 5.8mm thick. However, it’s 0.5mm thicker than the thinnest smartphone in the world—the 5.75mm Tecno Spark Slim—which was unveiled at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 among a host of new products and B2B reveals.

Still, the S25 Edge is a pretty slim smartphone that doesn’t compromise on performance.

The S25 Edge sports a resilient titanium body with curved edges, weighing in at 163 grams.

Its features include a 6.7-inch display, the latest Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, a 3,900 mAh battery, 12GB RAM, supports multiple technologies (5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 7, and Wi-Fi Direct Bluetooth v 5.4), and its Android 15/One UI 7 operating system is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Mobile Platform (the same processor available in all Galaxy S25 series devices globally).

Its 200MP wide lens ultra-high-resolution camera, 12MP ultra-wide camera, and 12MP front camera are enhanced by the same ProVisual Engine that was optimized for Galaxy S25 with pro-grade enhancements and a wide range of Galaxy AI-powered creation and editing features.

The phone is priced at $1,099.99 (256GB) and $1,219.99 (512GB – currently for $1,099.99 on a limited discount), and its color options include Titanium Silver, Titanium Jetblack, and Titanium Icyblue. U.S. citizens can avail services from Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and UScellular.

“Galaxy S25 Edge is more than a slim smartphone. The superior engineering that brought this revolutionary smartphone to life illustrates a commitment to overcoming barriers that helps Galaxy deliver truly unexpected premium experiences for people around the world,” said Samsung Electronics’ TM Roh.

“S25 Edge not only marks a breakthrough for its category, but it also accelerates important innovation across the mobile industry.”

This move can help Samsung get ahead of its rival Apple, as customers look for smartphones that are easy to carry without having to give up on performance.

Meanwhile, Apple is considering price hikes for its iPhones but is wary about adding increases linked to tariffs based on phones imported from China, which would be subject to a 30% levy in the U.S., even after temporary slashes between the two countries.

The rise in prices could help it offset tariff-based inflation, a move that’s disrupting its global supply chain, as the company moves production from China—where most of its phones are assembled—to India.

However, India is a good country for Apple, as the country led smartphone sales in Q1 2025, thanks to a record 23% year-on-year (YoY) growth in the quarter. Apple’s iPhone 16 sold the most in the period, accounting for 4% of India’s overall smartphone shipments.

Chinese rival Xiaomi witnessed a massive drop, hitting a 42% year-on-year decrease in shipments in Q1 2025 that took it from #5 to #6 in the list of the most sold smartphone brands in the country.

As India’s smartphone market expands further, the CEO of HTech (HONOR India), Madhav Sheth, revealed two new smartphone brands set to enter the Indian market.

On April 22, 2025, Sheth announced the launch of Alcatel smartphones, saying, “We have successfully signed technology agreements, and our local manufacturing initiatives are poised to significantly boost India’s tech ecosystem and enhance exports.”

This was followed by an announcement on May 12, introducing a smartphone powered by the NxtQuantum OS—an operating system designed and developed in India. The new smartphones and the OS will be made available to other countries as well.

“This is a phone imagined and built in India. Made to move across borders, pockets and lives,” reads the post published by Sheth on X.

Sheth is also the founder and CEO, NxtQuantum Shift Technologies.

Do you think Samsung’s diverse portfolio of products will help it capture a leading position in the global smartphone market, or will Apple have a say in the matter with its new phones?
