Updated on Mon, Jul 22, 2024
This includes Samsung Electronics' latest announcement with Oxford Semantic Technologies, a UK-based knowledge graph startup.
So, let’s explore what did the two companies revealed and what benefits it will bring.
What Did Samsung Electronics And Oxford Semantic Technologies Announce?
-
Through news releases published on their websites, Samsung Electronics and Oxford Semantic Technologies announced that the former had signed an agreement to acquire the latter.
-
Established in 2017, Oxford Semantic Technologies is at the forefront of knowledge graphing with its powerful technological capabilities in knowledge representation and semantic reasoning.
-
The move builds from a wide range of collaborations and projects between the two companies since 2018.
-
The acquisition will allow Samsung to access advanced core engines for personal knowledge graphs, which can “integrate information and context dispersed across various services and apps” to create solutions that can adapt to user preferences and enable personalized experiences.
-
By combining the technology with its devices, such as Galaxy S24 series, Samsung will be able to provide hyper-personalized user experiences and enforce enhanced security of sensitive personal data.
-
Furthermore, it will be able to bring the technology to other products, such as mobile phones, televisions, appliances and more.
-
The move will help enhance customer satisfaction by fulfilling customer expectations, simplifying customer journeys and building customer loyalty.
-
Neither party disclosed the value of the deal.
What Is Knowledge Graph Technology?
-
Knowledge graph technology makes it possible to understand how people use a product or service in real time, while enabling rapid information retrieval and recommendation.
-
The technology “stores information as an interconnected web of related ideas and process data in a manner similar to how humans acquire, remember, recall and reason over knowledge.”
-
It can be challenging to implement as it involves complex computations that are required to convert data into knowledge graphs.
-
However, Oxford’s knowledge graph technology makes data processing and advanced reasoning easier across devices and in the cloud.
-
This is evident in Oxford’s flagship AI-centric engine, RDFox, which allows it to collaborate with organizations engaged in finance, manufacturing and e-commerce across Europe and North America.

What Did Samsung Electronics And Oxford Semantic Technologies Executives Say?
-
Paul Kyungwhoon Cheun, Head of Samsung Research and CTO of Samsung Electronics, said, “As global consumers realize their growing need for more personalized AI experiences, the acquisition of Oxford Semantic Technologies will further boost Samsung’s strong capabilities in knowledge engineering.”
-
“This acquisition is another important step forward as we strive to deliver tailor-made AI experiences built upon our hallmark technological innovation.”
-
Peter Crocker, CEO of Oxford Semantic Technologies, said, “We are delighted to be working with Samsung.”
-
[Contd.] “By integrating Samsung’s expertise in user experience and data with our advanced knowledge graph and reasoning technology, we will provide Samsung’s customers with even more sophisticated personalization.
-
[Contd.] “In addition, developing RDFox with Samsung, and being part of the larger group, will provide all of our clients with an even better product, service and support.”
Do you think this move will help Samsung Electronics grow its customer confidence and help it achieve a bigger market share in the AI software market? Do you think Samsung's competitors should consider making similar moves?
