Sakana AI Makes Waves With $30 Million Seed Funding To Develop Nature-Inspired AI!
Updated on Fri, Jan 19, 2024
Sakana AI, the Tokyo-based startup, has just reeled in a whopping $30 million in seed funding to develop nature-inspired AI. Co-founded by two former Google wizards, David Ha and Llion Jones, the AI company is making waves, or should we say, creating a ripple effect in the artificial intelligence (AI) seascape. (Yeah, pun intended!)
According to Sakana’s website, “Our founding team have proven track records of developing breakthroughs in AI, where we take pride in setting the trend in AI development. We aim to develop transformative AI that will bring us into the next paradigm. The main focus of our research and development of new kinds of foundation models based on nature-inspired intelligence.”
What Is Sakana AI All About?
- In a world where AI giants are flexing their computational muscles, Sakana AI is taking a different approach. Sakana, which means "fish" in Japanese, has dived into the AI ocean with a philosophy inspired by the collective behaviors of animals.
- The startup's seed funding expedition was spearheaded by Lux Capital, the genius behind Hugging Face and joined by tech heavyweights Khosla Ventures, Sony, NTT and KDDI. With such high-profile investors casting their nets, seems like Sakana is the catch of the day in the AI ocean!
- David Ha and Llion Jones, Sakana's dynamic duo, were once captains of AI research at Google. Jones even penned the 2017 paper on the Transformer model, the backbone of chatbots like our chatty friend ChatGPT. Now, they're steering Sakana into uncharted waters, breaking away from the big-is-better trend in AI.
What’s So Different About Sakana AI?
-
According to Josh Wolfe, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Lux Capital, “Everyone in AI is chasing yesterday’s transformer architectures, and trying to push the boundaries of scaling laws. Lux is always on the quest for what’s next, from where and from whom. We found the answer in new foundation models inspired by evolution and complex adaptive systems that the team at Sakana AI is developing. Sakana AI being based in Japan with a first focus on Asian markets is unique and important.
-
He continued, “Lux is very bullish on Japan having one of the largest economies, a giant enterprise software market, and a tech-forward culture. In an increasingly complex world, Asia needs and will have an influential new AI trailblazer, and Japan, a powerful democratic nation and a great ally of the US, is poised to be that leader.”
-
As environmental concerns and computational strains mount due to colossal AI models, Sakana's approach appears timely and strategic.
-
The startup contends that massive models become inefficient as they scale up, whereas their collaborative, nature-inspired models can match and even exceed the capabilities of their larger counterparts.
-
The noteworthy financial backing from both Silicon Valley and Japanese tech giants propels Sakana into a unique position. Situated in the heart of Tokyo, the company’s early success signifies a potential shift in the AI paradigm from the traditional strongholds of the U.S. and China.
-
With newfound capital and strategic partnerships, Sakana eyes expanding its team and advancing its avant-garde AI techniques, potentially rewriting the narrative of AI innovation rooted in Asia.
As Sakana AI swims into the future of AI with fresh capital and strategic moves, the tech world is watching eagerly.
Do you think their nature-inspired AI techniques would be the tide that lifts all boats? Can Sakana’s compact AI models take on the popular Large Language Models (LLMs) of AI giants?
