OpenAI has been in the news for its awesome products – we mean, you’ve heard of ChatGPT, right?

Now, OpenAI has made its greatest announcement since the release of ChatGPT: the release of ChatGPT Enterprise, the commercial application of the artificial intelligence service!

OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap told CNBC that the tool has been in development for "under a year" with the support of more than 20 companies of diverse sizes and industries (companies such as Block, Canva, and The Estée Lauder Companies were all beta testers). ChatGPT Enterprise gives business users unrestricted use of GPT-4, up to twice the speed of prior versions and API credits. The pricing information will not be made available to the public because "it will depend, for us, on every company's use cases and size," he further stated.

Microsoft's increased investment in OpenAI earlier this year — an additional $10 billion — made it the biggest AI investment of the year, according to PitchBook. After only two months on the market, ChatGPT surpassed 100 million monthly active users and became the fastest-growing consumer application in history, as described by Brian Burke, research vice president at Gartner: "a phenomenal uptake — we've frankly never seen anything like it, and interest has grown ever since."

Lightcap and OpenAI discovered 80% of Fortune 500 companies were using ChatGPT. ChatGPT Enterprise will allow such clients to input company data to train and tailor ChatGPT for their industries and use cases, unlike the consumer-facing version. ChatGPT Business, a cheaper membership for smaller businesses, has not yet been announced.

Lightcap told CNBC that rolling out the enterprise version first, and waiting on the business tier, “gives us a little bit more of a way to engage with teams in a hands-on way and understand what the deployment motion looks like before we fully open it up.”

What are the essential ChatGPT Enterprise facts?

An OpenAI spokesman told CNBC, “This is an OpenAI product independent of Microsoft. Our product should function with various tools, including Microsoft's. Customers can choose their business platform.”

CEO Sam Altman tweeted in December that ChatGPT, like many large language models, costs OpenAI “single-digit cents” every chat, meaning that serving 100 million users a month may cost millions.

Lightcap told CNBC that prioritising features was ChatGPT Enterprise's biggest challenge.

Of all the items releasing in the next couple of months, “the prioritisation of how you pulled forward those things based on how people are using the product — and what people really want and what’s empowering — was the topic of a lot of debate, I would say, on the team.”

Code Interpreter, a ChatGPT Plus function, is now Advanced Data Analysis, a feature that “sat stack-ranked in a list with a bunch of other things that we think are kind of equally or more exciting,” but companies' feedback led them to prioritise offering it sooner rather than later.

OpenAI also stated in a blog post that “We do not train on your business data or conversations, and our models don’t learn from your usage,” and that clients’ conversation data is secured at rest and in transit. Lightcap stated the company logs aggregate tool usage data, including performance metadata, as is normal.

OpenAI wants to onboard “as many enterprises as we can over the next few weeks,” according to its blog.
