OpenAI has been leading the AI race with its portfolio of products such as AI chatbot ChatGPT and AI video generator Sora. It recently announced the launch of ChatGPT Pro with a new subscription plan giving users unlimited access to OpenAI o1, o1-mini, GPT-4o and advanced voice features. It also struck partnerships with Future, the global platform for specialist media, which distributes content for top brands like Marie Claire, PC Gamer, TechRadar, Tom’s Guide, Tom’s Hardware, The Week and more.

Now, in a groundbreaking announcement, OpenAI has unveiled the successor to its o1 models. The latest reasoning model family, o3 and o3-mini, is here and it showcases OpenAI’s advancements in AI safety and alignment.

Despite this innovative launch, the much-anticipated GPT-5 model has fallen short of expectations, marking a challenging phase for the AI pioneer.

So, what’s new with the o3 models’ family and why is GPT-5 facing hurdles?

Let’s explore!

What Are The o3 And o3-mini Models?

OpenAI introduced o3 and o3-mini as the successors to its o1 and o1-mini models, emphasizing enhanced reasoning capabilities and safety alignment. The o3 models excel at breaking down complex problems into smaller steps using a method called "chain-of-thought," improving transparency and accuracy in responses.

One of the key innovations in o3 is "deliberative alignment," where the models reference OpenAI’s safety policy during inference to ensure safe, ethical outputs. Moreover, these models outperform its competitors (and even OpenAI’s o1) in coding, competitive programming, advanced math and scientific problem-solving, solidifying OpenAI’s position in reasoning capabilities.

The o3-mini variant includes adaptive thinking time, enabling users to choose between low, medium and high compute settings based on their needs. Here’s a breakdown of how o3 performs against o1 and o1’s preview models:

OpenAI has also invited AI safety researchers to test the o3 models ahead of their public release in 2025. This underscores its commitment to AI safety and reliability, garnering praise from AI safety and ethics experts.

So, how does this AI model “think” of safety policy before answering?

How Does Deliberative Alignment Work?

Deliberative alignment enables the o-series models to cite OpenAI’s safety specifications during inference. This helps in integrating safety considerations directly into the reasoning process of the models. By referencing safety guidelines, the models can identify and refuse to answer unsafe prompts, such as those involving illegal or harmful activities.

Researchers trained the o3 family of models using synthetic data generated by its internal AI models, bypassing the need for human-written training data to reduce latency and costs. Further, OpenAI claims that this approach has led to significant improvements in alignment benchmarks, outperforming its competitors like Google’s Gemini 1.5 and Anthropic’s Claude 3.5.

OpenAI said in a statement, “We used deliberative alignment to align OpenAI’s o-series models, enabling them to use chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning to reflect on user prompts, identify relevant text from OpenAI’s internal policies, and draft safer responses. Our approach achieves highly precise adherence to OpenAI’s safety policies, and without requiring human-labeled CoTs or answers.”

Despite these advancements, OpenAI faces challenges in balancing safety with innovation, especially with its hotly anticipated GPT-5 model.

What Is Happening With OpenAI’s GPT-5?

Codenamed Orion, GPT-5 has been in development for over 18 months but has faced significant delays and high costs. Experts estimate that this breakthrough model costs $500 million for a single training run, which understandably puts OpenAI under a financial burden.

Moreover, initial training runs on GPT-5 have been slower than anticipated, raising concerns about its scalability and return on investment. The internal challenges include strategic disagreements and high-profile departures from its AI safety team, which have further impacted the development timeline.

New reports indicate that GPT-5’s advancements, while notable, do not justify the enormous costs. This has led to a postponement of its release to 2025. The Wall Street Journal reports that GPT-5 will not rely exclusively on publicly available data and OpenAI’s licensing deals. This means OpenAI needs to hired experts to create unique data by writing code or solving math problems, as well as synthetic data created by the o1 model.

All these factors are contributing to GPT-5's struggles. So, will this affect the AI leader’s dominance?

Conclusion

OpenAI’s o3 models represent a significant step in AI reasoning and safety, setting a new benchmark for future developments in the field. Its adoption of “deliberative alignment” offers a scalable approach to integrating ethical considerations into the responses of AI models, potentially influencing its rivals and industry standards.

However, the delays in GPT-5 highlight the diminishing returns of scaling large AI models and LLMs without corresponding innovations in its architecture. OpenAI’s challenges with GPT-5 highlight the need for alternative strategies to advance AI capabilities, especially when it comes to cost.

As AI continues to evolve, OpenAI’s focus on balancing innovation with safety will be a critical compass for the AI developer community.

Do you think OpenAI’s o3 models will redefine AI reasoning standards? Will GPT-5’s setbacks overshadow OpenAI’s achievements?
